While I normally don't give two slimes about shading, point of the 8-bit contest is to look like an NES game, and NES games used shading all over the place.

I think my favorite is Seasonal Spectre, but I love so many of them!

It's not for lack of trying, I can tell you that much. I suspect that the fact that I want my heroes to wear clothes plays a part.

Based on my palette, does anyone have any constructive advice to give on making these heroes look any better?

The rules state he can only use three colors... and it looks like he's using all of them. That rules out dithering for now.

?

Dither = Image

Although I don't really see a point in dithering something so small.

Well, okay, he CAN dither. But given the colors he's using, there's really no reason he should. There's no feasible way he could do it and not make the sprites mud-ugly is my point.

Dithering should be kept minimal and with purpose if you're still new to pixel art (and even then shouldn't. I'm guilty of overusing it myself but whenever I get around to it I'm going to work towards undoing a lot of my mistakes.

For that gator.. It looks like you did a poor job shading and then dithered it in hopes of it looking good.

The robot... The dithering doesn't work at all and isn't even actual shading.

RC:

Play some of the entries from last year. You may be able to draw some ideas from them.

A complete list of the games are here:

http://thehamsterwheel.net/contests/8bit2008.html

Then you can search for them here on SS or CP. Hope this helps.

For what it's worth, Ronin, I think your hero sprites are pretty good. They are blockey of course, but that is okay for an 8-bit game. And I think their posture actually reminds me of old-fashioned cartoon characters (Steamboat Willy, Bosco, and the like.)

I especially like the stepping frame for the first hero, it looks like he is doing a little dance. In fact, maybe you should even move that frame one pixel down to emphasize that effect when he animates.

I just threw the light and dark greens around on the shape until I felt it looked good.
Well, okay, he CAN dither. But given the colors he's using, there's really no reason he should.
I'm not against changing the colors of individual characters. At this point, it only matters that the first guy wears at least one of my three blues(being a policeman). Again, this is my master palette. I was thinking about changing some of the wolf's colors anyway, to further distinguish him from the hero. Any suggestions there?

That's not a half bad idea. I already played Arcadia because it was there for the TGC.

That's worth quite a lot. Thanks.

The main character started as some crayon doodles I drew on coasters and napkins at the bar where I work.

This was the part I was most afraid of having come off wrong.

Great idea! I'll do that.
