Portraits for the first few characters in Endless Saga

Image

Endless Saga is progressing veeeerrrryyy slowly, but i am picking up the pace. Hopefully i can release it for the game marathon, but that's highly unlikely..

BTW, someone should really make new updated tutorials... even i'm getting lost in the sea of new features...

Those portraits are really nicely done, especially because the attention to proportions actually look right and not your typical crappy anime fanart. I like how you use the highlights to give a lighting effect, though the guy on the lower left doesn't have one.

Yeah, there's no points on his face that would reflect highlights, so i left as is...

Anyways, some expressions!

I gotta say, the little white tear drop thing on the two first two guys in pictures 4 and 5... I'm not a huge fan of it. It's a little too anime-ish. Their facial expressions already communicate plenty without it. The black guy might benefit from a highlight on his face like the rest of em. Have you tried that yet?

Diagr's "surprised" portrait is the best thing ever :)

Lol... my art style being primarily anime-ish type, I guess it's sorta habit. I think i'll get rid of it

As i said before, there aren't many surfaces on his face at that angle that would reflect such a drastic white lighting to such degree as the other 3. The girl, in fact, only has the highlight on the hair. The other option is to add a lighter shade as a highlight. But i didn't do that since i wanted to be consistent with the drawing style and the other 3 didn't have that form of highlights.

But I think i'll play around with his portrait more, and try to figure out how to highlight him a little more to be consistent with the other 3

-Removed the teeth from Lynn on the last portrait
-added some anti-aliasing tones
-add extra highlights and similar highlights on Diagr
-removed the sweatdrop

Okay seriously, am I the only one who thinks Diagr looks better without the highlights? To me he looks downright goofy with them...

I agree. It may be the way you did them here, but I find myself preferring the originals.

For the guy on the very right... Get rid of the highlight on his left cheek since light isn't hitting the cheek like it is the right cheek. You already have shading defining the shape of his face there.

For his right cheek, change the shape of the highlight to match what he should look like better. He should appear to have more rounded cheeks instead of high cheek bones like the other characters have.

For his surprise animation, don't curve the highlight around the bottom of his eye. Keep to the light source. If you want to define a crevice there, use shading instead.

the originals were awesome!!! The "fixes" only seem to make things worse instead of better. If it's not broken don't fix it.

actually, i think the main problem with my new drawings were the new highlight tone i added (which was added to justify the white highlight in attempt to add a white highlight to Diagr)

When i have time I'll remove the new highlight, but I'll keep the anti-aliasing tones, and the wrap-around lighting (the lighting on the same side as the shading i.e. the right on the neck on Leo and Terry)

I'll post it tomorrow and get views on that.

I think I rushed too much on his highlights. I simply thought of highlighting cheekbones and threw it in randomly. I can probably work at it a lot better, but I personally think he looked much better without any highlights at all.

Yeah, the highlights appear to suck much worse than I'd pictured them in my head. But I'm not a fan of the added depth you tried to add on their faces with all the extra tones. I think the originals were better.
