You can vote for your own game
I think that's a really bad idea. Then you get some people who give themselves 5/5, some who try to be fair (but they can't possibly be unbiased), and some who don't vote on it so get a 3, and some who don't vote at all because of the rule. Plus if a game has more than one author this amplifies the problem.
I also think giving a game a 3 if it's missing from a list isn't great. Ranking games by their average may be better. Often people don't play (and vote on) the games that they think won't be worth playing.
I'm willing to make some slight alterations to the voting system but only if we're still super far away from the deadline. I asked for feedback repeatedly over the referendum period and didn't get any feedback, so I had to go with established tradition
Do you make love with the same urgency you make games?
I would say I TOO am dubious on the stipulation that you can vote for your own game in the case of it being made by a team, so for that would it be acceptable to folks if I say that if you're part of a team only one person on the team can vote for their game?
Went ahead and did that.
As for an automatic 3, I kind of understand that because if you're going to vote but, say, vote for ONE game and didn't play the others... the others don't deserve to get 1s just because the voter wouldn't even play or vote for them. Just as they wouldn't deserve a 5 for the same circumstance. So, if you as the voter feel a game shouldn't get a 3, then you need to play it and vote on it.

It's come to my attention that Spoon intends to let Heart Slam go for five whole months. This kinda matters because he's the one who made me rush the Ridiculous Games Contest in the first place so that he could start Heart Slam at a 'critical' time of year. Perhaps you see my irritation.
So I'm considering giving you guys an extension of one month. What say you!

Considering we still have more than two weeks and I'm basically done, an extension would just keep me in Dracula purgatory for even longer. So if you want me to suffer at the hand of my own lack of self control, be my guest. I wouldn't blame you.
I finished my submission in a month, so I've not even been using the full allotted time as is.
I'm kind of of the opinion that part of the challenge of the contests is time management and creating a project you can achieve in that time. If you need a full additional month, you haven't been using the time given very well at all. If "life is happening" and you can't work on it, then you should probably dip out and not stretch the contest out even further for those who did adhere to the full challenge.
With all that said, an extension isn't abnormal, but a full month is excessive. A week, two max feels fair, but four is a lot. If you're unsure what to do, take a vote of all active participants and honor the results of that.

Just to sort of put what you're suggesting into perspective Bena.
The RGC has generally ended on or around April 1st
Ridiculous/Terrible Games Competition 2022 - The Homage Strikes Back 2022 Mar 1 - Apr 15
Ridiculous Games Contest 2020 - The 1998 one 2020 Mar 1 - Mar 31
Ridiculous Games Contest 2019 Mar 24 - Mar 31
Ridiculous Games Contest 2012 Mar 28 - Apr 30
And the heart contest has traditionally run from the beginning of summer till around the middle or end of fall
Heart of the OHR 2012 2012 June 1 - Nov 30
Last year's rgc was 6 months long and was that way because rmz wanted to host it on his birthday.
Therefore, any misgivings about the length of previous year's RGC should be directed at rmz.

Whoa. It was PJ's idea to make it a birthday celebration (and the demake theme). So any misgivings should be a split 50/50 between me and PJ.
I don't see any issue with the schedule as is. Generally I don't spend more than ten days between start and finish for a contest game. And I may not have time for RGC this year. Not that I can't make time, I just have so much unfinished work that (honestly) Should take precedence. I feel like the heart contests are mostly for whatever gets done in the entry period. While different from what Summer SLAM was, I find it natural to combine the nature of those two contests.
Aside from our tiny community, there doesn't seem to be any problem with itch.io having multiple jams going on at all times. People just choose which ones work for their current mode.
A lot of people are saying they're fine with the current deadline. I'll give folks more time to weigh in.
Also it's come to my attention that what precipitated the new referendum was caused by a bit of a misunderstanding that started back in January. Pay my comments about Spoon no mind

I have nothing valuable to contribute, but I wanted to take this opportunity to say "misgivings"
Misgivings!
Misgivings!
Misgivings!
I spent about 20 minutes at the beginning of the contest drawing some profoundly meh sprites for Sherlock Holmes RPG. I might have written one text box. Then I proceeded to ignore it.
I solemnly promise that if given an extension, I will continue to ignore it, and that will not be finished or uploaded in any way.
