Here we go again...
For the First Time!
It was Summer Slam, it was Summer Slap, it was Summer Spam.... But now... It's taken on a new and final form!!!
This Summer, as a new addition to the history of the Heart of the OHR, to the summer competition, and tot he OHR community as a whole, I am beginning a new era in OHR community game competitions.
Hopefully this competition serves to inspire and trigger your inspiration. It may all seem a little insane and need to come with some sort of warning, I'm not sure. If you're not worried about that, then join in on the competition and get inspired!
A Brief History:
For those familiar with the OHR Competitions, feel free to skip everything and submit your games somewhere near the deadline date. For those who are new or perhaps curious, gaze into the heart of the community. Or don't. Your choice.
In 1997, a person names James Paige made a program that would guide the lives of many people had would never meet. That program was the Official Hampster Republic Role Playing Game Creation Engine. OHRRPGCE for short.
In 2010, A person by the name of Pepsi Ranger thought times were changing.
" It seems that as times change, interests start moving in new directions, and the things that first captured our hearts and attention about indie-RPG design had since faded into obscurity."
Then began what many refer to as "The Dark Times". Every 2 years, a heart would appear and the members of the OHRRPGCE community would focus on appeasing the heart with games that it wanted. Freedom was under attack. It wasn't until 2021, when a ban of brave OHR soldiers from the little know discord channel banned together to shame the heart into early retirement. But the heart still beat. It threatened to never cease and to influence OHR devs for years to come.
Now, in the Summer of 2022, it's time to finish it off. Together, we SLAM the Heart to the ground.
This is the beginning of Heart Slam: Summer of the OHR
Competition Rules:
- Submission window June 21st till September 15th
-DOES NOT NEED TO BE AN RPG. What categorizes as an RPG can be left open for debate, but at the end of the day it does not matter. In 2010, we saw one game after another put under a microscope, while we all debated what is and is not an RPG. No longer!
-NonRPGs are permitted (See Above). (RPGS are also Permitted)
-Joke games are permitted (though funny ones are also okay).
-Special scripting is okay (as it should always be).
-Games must be longer or shorter then 30 minutes. (This can include story elements or gameplay elements).
-Updates to previous games are permitted and even encouraged. (As long as the game was not marked as complete before the start of the competition. What is and isn't finished is up to you to decide.)
-Updates to previous games should be good sized, but it will be left up to the community to decide whether it was enough or not.
-Games that you started working on before June 21st are permitted! Think of the competition dates as the submission window!
-If you are posting a re-released game for the competition, let us know what's new. It really helps with things and otherwise we'll be forced to go back and find out ourselves and the community may not enjoy that and may judge harshly because of it.
-Also, you should use the OHRRPGCE to make the game. However! I know there has been some talk about learning other engines and that should be encouraged. So! If you have previously released an OHR game, and have uploaded it here on slimesalad, then you can enter this competition with a game that's not made in the OHRRPGCE. (assuming anyone has any actual plans to do this...)
Note: I hope it's clear that you can basically make anything you want.
Important Note: Historically, there have been crazy gimmicks or enforced rules that guided and restricted game devs. You may notice that this competition is not doing that. I hope you see this as a good thing rather than a bad thing. If this is not your cup of tea, there will be additional competition later this year and more next year.
Another Important Note: Voting may go poorly for competitors making clear attempts at abusing the rules.
Game entries are due on September 15th. Late entries may receive votes based on that lateness by the community. Anything submitted after September 11th is not in the competition at all. There is almost no chance of an additional extension, plan accordingly.
Voting:
Voting will run from September 15, 2022 - October 15th, 2022.
Note that I will not close voting until there is a minimum of 5 votes, so if the deadline comes and goes and I have fewer than 5, voting will remain open until the minimum is met, even if it takes years!
How Voting Works
Please cast your votes in ranked order listing all games in the contest.
Any vote not in ranked order will be estimated into ranked order.
Any left out games in a vote will be added to the bottom of that vote, in a random order
Voting and game entries will both take place in this thread.
