The 2017 In Review Contest & 2017 Top 5 Voting

Post by SDHawk »

GOAL:

As individuals, to review every game released in 2017. (But it's still okay to contribute less than that!)

BONUS TOP FIVE:

In addition to the normal review contest, we're also creating a top 5 games of 2017 list. Votes will be weighed by the number of reviews written for the contest.

To vote simply post an ordered 1-5 list in this thread. You don't have to write any reviews to vote, nor do you have to vote in order to write reviews.

The results will be posted shortly after the review contest ends.

REVIEW RULES:
  • * Write a review for each game!
    * Make each review at least 3 paragraphs long!
    * Post a link to (or the review itself) in this thread!
    * Do it for every game on the list before March 12th, 2018.
    * It's okay to use reviews you wrote before this contest started. As long as it covers the latest version of the game as of 2016 and follows the above rules.
    * For the compilation list you can review one, several, or all of the games on the list as a single compilation review. The list counts as a single 3-paragraphs required review. You can write separate reviews for each game if preferred.
    * By entering this contest you are authorizing the republishing of your submitted reviews in compilation format. They will not be charged for.
FAQ:

Q: I've never written a review before / I'm bad at writing! I shouldn't enter, right?
A: Authors aren't looking for exhaustive critiques of their games. They're looking for feedback!

Q: Do I have to review my own games?
A: Yes! Most authors go for a "director's commentary" style for their own games, but the exact format that you review your own work in is up to you.

List of 2017 Games:

1999: Megallennium 6-in-1 Mega Cart by OHR Community
Action 37 by Foxley

LinearQuest IX: Get This Party Started by TheLordThyGod
Pur: Ignis by MorpheusKitami
Star Trucker - Beta Release by maunderingcabal
Super Game Dev by Virtuous Sword

Compilation List (Review one, some, or all of these games as a single review. )

Carcere Vicis by TMC & Master K
Entrepreneur: The Beginning by Pepsi Ranger
LinearQuest IV: Ghouls & Grinding by TheLordThyGod
LinearQuest V: Angry Angles by TheLordThyGod
LinearQuest VI: Moles & Magic by TheLordThyGod
LinearQuest VII: A Whole New World by TheLordThyGod
LinearQuest VIII: Another Level by TheLordThyGod
Wandering Hamster by Bob the Hamster

Game Criteria:

General: Released in 2017 or received a major content update in 2017.
Compilation Games: 2017 minor content updates (more substantial than just bug fixes, but short on new content), extremely short, requires two players, exclusive to phones, commercial (unless free copies are offered to reviewers), etc.
Not Even Compilation Games: Tech demos, tutorials, tools, 2017 minor updates that don't add any new content (or have ambiguous update descriptions), not OHR games.

Qualifying length is less about literal play time and more about a game having "things to talk about". Selection is incredibly arbitrary, and games may be shifted between lists as people make arguments for/against games..

Okay, I'll kick it off. Here's my review for Fnrrf Ygm Schnish. There are written and video components attached. Enjoy both.

You use the [yt]...[/yt] tags (see here)

Oh nice, you actually went to the trouble of editing the video of your playthrough/review. I have never seen anyone else do that. As for the review, that was probably an appropriate response to the game. Was kind of light on details, but it's actually nice that the review doesn't give the whole game away. After watching most let's plays, there's no longer any point playing the game afterwards.

Thanks! My main goal with making videos is basically to advertise all the games here. Not that I have a following, but people are more inclined to watch videos than read reviews. That being said, I'm planning on adding this video into an actual review, like how Pepsi did.

If I hadn't edited down that video, you would have gotten 20 minutes of me losing my train of thought, coughing up a lung, and sometimes just pausing for a good 10 seconds for no apparent reason. No one wants to watch that.

I'd actually do more editing myself if I had the proper equipment and time. The problem with the let's play format is that most people won't watch it all the way through (except for the developer, whom I believe the videos are really for), so I think the ability and time to edit a video down to a two- to five-minute review is golden. More people should do it if they can.

Hey! This is over. Don't submit any more reviews. This will be the final review contest that I host.
