Today is the 4th Axeiversary we've gotten to celebrate. Crazy to think we've done 4/11 of them. Every year we are able to I am more and more proud of how much respect I have given this franchise.

To expand on the video we made, we got the optional character coming, who is a lot of fun to play as. You have to finish the Dr. Yahoo side quest with the satellites in the game to get it. The current build lets you get all 6 of them and even tells you where the lab is. I just recently finished it, but the art and battle isn't finished yet.

We're going to do a boss rematch cup at the Fighting Zoo. I didn't think I'd do something like this, but I'm actually excited to rebalance the bosses as copies and have different formations than the main story did for these fights. Like Bad Santa and the Vampire Man Baby Kid instead of VMBK with Dr. Stinkyhead. We had people vote on Twitter who the final boss of that would be, so that will also be fun.

Also putting in the Sea Ghost which is basically the super boss of the game and will be what I hope to be the most difficult boss I've ever made. Basically it's a boss for people that have leveled up heroes appropriately and have a good understanding of how to get the most out of their heroes. It's going to be punishing and downright unfair, but it's a super boss, that's fine. The Weapons in FF7 were, and Ozma was in FF9.

We had plans to finish all of the optional content after release so it's really nice seeing some chunks of the game truly get to the 100% marker.

I finished the optional character scenes this week. Felt good to have one of the big things checked off the list.

Fun fact about this scene is I avoided things with pixel movement for whatever reason back during House Heroes. Wasn't comfortable with it, not sure why. There was a scene in House Villains where all the villains hugged and I didn't do it sheerly because I couldn't wrap my brain around something as dumb as pixel movement. So in the pages of the comic, Liborg gives Army Chihuahua a big hug, and I thought... this time I'm gonna do it right.

I think this will conclude my work with Liborg in the game. For a character with no moves, he had as much work as one with them it felt like. There are three giant computers in the game. If you access them with Liborg he can update his software which allows him to boost his attack power up to two tiers higher. The third computer makes it so his super shot doesn't revert his attack back to nothing after the shot. Don't think I'll be telling the player about this though. In the spirit of oldschool games with word of mouth, it's fun to have secrets like this.

Everytime Spoonweaver brings up Axe Cop he harps on the color of the 1st level being too red. Last night I humored him and said I'll have another discussion with Soda Piggy about it, as Soda said it was fine before and to disregard Spoon (like we all should do). Today he came up with some alternate colors to try that work to satisfy the complaints from Spoon and a few others.

There's also a small list of things I'm going to add to this stage for tutorial purposes. If you struggled on this area please share your experience so I can see about making it an even stronger tutorial stage. My hope for the mission was for everybody to learn to use abilities, basic combat and learn to explore the areas.

Hey everybody, I only have to do battle balance for the final Axe Cop update. I think I'll stream it on my twitch account tonight, it might be fun for some non-OHR people to see how the sausage is made so to speak. If you are around and want to hang out tonight, I'll probably start around 7ish EST. Should be about an hour or so I suspect.

I think Soda Piggy and I were both massively burnt out on this, which is why the DLC update came a month later than planned, and lighter. It's still a substantial update.

Features:
  • Recolored Land of Volcanoes
    Dr. Yahoo Satellite Quest Completed
    Liborg as Optional Character
Llama Cup (Boss Rematch) at Fighting Zoo
    Sea Ghost (Super Boss)
Ice Blast Move for Bat Warthog Man
Missing Elements:
  • Conclusion to the Ben Matanga Side Quest
    Land of Volcanoes Memory Machine
Misc. Extra Attacks for Axe Cop and Flute Cop
I like to hope someday that Soda and I will finish the two missing pieces, but I think I can make peace with the fact that they aren't totally finished. As everybody tells me, the game already has so much to offer. And it is 100% with it's story pieces, so missing a little DLC is totally acceptable. I'll likely make a video of some kind to announce this a bit more properly than just a screenshot. But it is nice to be able to walk away from this now.

Considering that this could well be the final content update, I've got to say congratulations again on making it to the end of such a tortuous journey! It's also heartening to see that you went right back into working on other games despite being burnt out on this one. Hate to see people quit game-making on a low note.

I missed it, what's Sodapiggy doing now?

I don't talk to him nearly as much as I did during production time, but I believe he's just been burying himself in work and family life. Seems to be doing just fine.

Yeah, getting back to Axe Cop did feel a little painful at times. I maybe could have balanced some stuff a little better but honestly I needed to move on and just enjoy it being complete. I am still massively burnt out, but decompressing and such has been very nice.

Hey if anybody is interested... Axe Cop the game turns 1 next month. That year has flown by. Sometimes it feels like it's not out yet, sometimes it feels like it's 2-3 year behind me. It's weird. But... I wanted to offer something to the people who enjoyed it or supported it by commissioning a shirt design from an artist I admired who did art that was similar to Soda Piggy's promo art.

I'm going to have a local screenprinting shop handle them and try to get them all the orders before Thanksgiving.

Super happy and proud to be the first OHR game to feature Steam achievements! Major thanks to Mike and TMC for knocking this out so quickly. You guys rock. TMC said there's a way to do multi-cart achievements for games so I might be looking into that for the Super Collection next.

Thanks man.

Today just so happens to be the anniversary of the game's release. Rather than it be on a specific date, it was released on Thanksgiving, so every Thanksgiving is the game's anniversary. Soda Piggy and I were able to make this fun retrospective about the production of the game too. I think it turned out pretty good.
