The 2016 In Review Contest [Reviews: 43]

Post by SDHawk »

GOAL:

As individuals, to review every game released in 2016. (But it's still okay to contribute less than that!)

RULES:
  • * Write a review for each game!
    * Make each review at least 3 paragraphs long!
    * Post a link to (or the review itself) in this thread!
    * Do it for every game on the list before August 14th, 2017.
    * It's okay to use reviews you wrote before this contest started. As long as it covers the latest version of the game as of 2016 and follows the above rules.
    * For the compilation list you can review one, several, or all of the games on the list as a single compilation review. The list counts as a single 3-paragraphs required review.
    * By entering this contest you are authorizing the republishing of your submitted reviews in compilation format. They will not be charged for.
FAQ:

Q: I've never written a review before / I'm bad at writing! I shouldn't enter, right?
A: Authors aren't looking for exhaustive critiques of their games. They're looking for feedback!

Q: Do I have to review my own games?
A: Yes! Most authors go for a "director's commentary" style for their own games, but the exact format that you review your own work in is up to you.

Game Criteria:

General: Released in 2016 or received a major content update in 2016.
Compilation Games: Tech demos, tutorials, not games, 2016 minor content updates (but more substantial than just bug fixes), extremely short, requires two players, exclusive to phones, commercial (unless free copies are offered to reviewers), etc.
Not Even Compilation Games: Minor updates that don't add new content (or ambiguous update descriptions), not OHR games.

Game List Changes:

(I wasn't exhaustive in creating the compilation list, so expect some games to move to it over the course of the contest.)

April 18th, 2017: Added Surfasaurus to the compilation list.
May 5th, 2017: Moved Nathan's Halloween to the compilation list.
May 16th, 2017: Moved Surfasaurus to required games list.
June 4th, 2017: Added missing giz tech demos.

Wow, I thought that there wasn't a 2016 in Review Contest just because people were burnt out or something, not that it was an oversight. I'm glad it's happening!

Oh good, now I finally have a motivation to post all that feedback on Dungeon Bout which I never finished writing up! See, it helps to gamify things
* Do it for every game on the list before August 14th, 2017.

Good luck, human friends.

If anyone wants to look at the new Kane content and doesn't want to pay for the Steam version I can throw you a Steam key, but only if you're going to actually review the game. The new content is about an hour of game.

Generalization: It seems like no one puts screenshots in their game listing anymore. What's wrong with these people?! No one wants to play a game without even a screenshot.

I can't agree with this enough. A screenshot makes you want to play (or not play!) a game more than any other thing.

Here is my review of You Need a Hero by idontknow:

EDIT:
I'm currently playing games in windowed mode via Wine. It would be cool to have a native Linux version for download since Alt-Tabbing to take some notes sometimes makes the menus go crazy.

I'm a little surprised to see the Heart of the OHR 2016 contest winner missing from this list.

Also, can we submit reviews we've posted to Steam? I'll be happy to post my previous 2016 reviews here if I can also post my Steam reviews.

Thanks. The list is scraped from the game list, so games without even a stub entry get missed without people pointing them out. That said I'm having to put it into the compilation list since only the phone version is free, unless RMZ is willing to offer free PC copies to reviewers (he also might want to remember to link the steam version on his website- wasn't even sure there was a PC version at first).

Steam reviews are fine. Copy and pasting them into the thread would be ideal for archival purposes, but not required.

I could have sworn there was a free PC version of Surfasaurus somewhere out there, unless it got taken down.

It's neat my game was the first reviewed in the 2016 in review contest. Feedback is always appreciated.
Working as intended!

Questions: :???:
A) What is a "compilation format"? And why could one be charged for this?
B) Are comic-reviews okay? I found some in the old review-contests.

A) He means that he might compile the reviews into a single source, like a webpage, a book, or a film. The charging bit means that even if he does compile the reviews we make into some other format, he won't be making any money off of it. He won't sell a book, or a movie, or a film.

B) Comic reviews always counted before, I see no reason they wouldn't still be acceptable.

Comic reviews are fine. Ideally attach them to your post/review, rather than using an external image host since those usually delete images after a few months. Refer to Giz's post about A.
