Dropbox for Linux - completely broken?

Talk about things that are not making games here. But you should also make games!

Dropbox for Linux - completely broken?

Post by Foxley »

I recently installed Mint on a refurb Thinkpad I picked up, and I've noticed about a week ago that the tray icon didn't work. So I tried removing it and reinstalling it... and now nothing works. Apparently this has been a known issue for at least a few weeks but Dropbox hasn't fixed it yet, and none of the workarounds worked for me either.

Almost thinking about moving to Google drive or something, even though I like Dropbox and the way it mimics a regular file folder. But I need to have reliable syncs/uploads while working on game stuff. :(

Actually (on Slackware GNU/Linux), I have the problem that the dropbox icon usually doesn't appear on my taskbar. I've never bothered to find out why, because I'm happy using the commandline interface (on the other hand, integration with your file browser is quite useful because it lets you right click on a file to get a public link: I don't have that either).

To use the commandline client, just open a terminal and type "dropbox" for help. "dropbox status" to see if it's running (and whether it's busy uploading) and "dropbox start" to start it if it isn't started.

The tray icon has never been reliable, but I have never needed it (I had forgotten about the problem until you mentioned it)

I suggest just setting up the command line tools. Your ~/Dropbox folder will be synced reliably, even if you don't see the tray icon.
