Rehashed Contest Vote Review: Undeadliest

Post by Gizmog »

I hate doin this to one of my bros, but I'm stamping this trend out like Smallpox:

ALWAYS INCLUDE GAME.EXE IN YOUR GAMES. THERE'S A BUTTON ON THE MAIN MENU OF CUSTOM LABELLED "DISTRIBUTE GAME" WHICH WILL AUTOMATICALLY MAKE YOU A ZIP FILE WITH ALL THE NECESSARY FILES TO PLAY YOUR GAME. THIS GUARANTEES THAT NO MATTER WHEN A PERSON DOWNLOADS YOUR GAME, OR WHAT VERSION OF GAME.EXE THEY USE, THAT YOUR GAME WILL WORK FOR THEM THE WAY IT WAS INTENDED TO.
With that out of the way, in my Random Collab Vote, I wrote: Team Shizpish: Undeadliest
4/5
This was a cool entry. Shiz brings a certain flavor to every project he works on and that flavor really shines through here. I love the music choices, even the isometric style which I usually think is weird in OHR games works great for Undeadliest.

There are some minor quibbles. The ending is kind of a let down, ammo conservation isn't a big issue (though it doesn't feel like it needs to be) and the town is a little bit big for my tastes, but Shiz's flavor and some really smart choices keep those from dragging the whole game down.

The character designs are great. Even without dialogue, the art gives them each a distinct feel which makes finding a new one a treat, even though they're all (seemingly) identical in terms of stats. The battles are a cool simulation of how you'd imagine an actual gunfight with zombies would work. The goofy little jokes that pop up around certain buildings make exploration feel worth your effort.

It's a great demo, and a concept I'd love to see expanded. I'd kind of like to see food expanded too, maybe a system where each variety of food changes a certain stat, and you have to decide if you want to spread your food out for maximum energy or go on an eating spree and hulk the slime out but risk going hungry later. Of course, that might just be left over King of Gourmet type delusions about wanting to see a man eat a million pounds of Borscht and then turn into an unstoppable zombie-killing machine.

Kinda curious what Sheepish contributed, to be honest. Great work!

The boss battle music might be the catchiest thing I've ever heard. Oh, and... hehehe... P. Juice
Since writing this, I replayed the old Shadowrun game for SNES and found out that's where he got the main overworld song from. I think maybe he was trying to do something in that style in general, from the combat down to the isometric perspective. The design makes much more sense having Shadowrun as a point of reference. I'd also bitch a little that the "*" symbol he uses for EVERY ITEM PICK UP IN THE GAME could've been actual pictures or color coded or something, but it doesn't really matter. It's not like there's anything you don't want to pick up. I also picked up a rogue-like feeling I didn't get last time, even though I don't think anything was randomized. Still worth a play! Worth multiple plays! Play it now!

The hidden boss theme is still catchy as slime, by the way.

This secret boss is so cool. Seen here, his Ultros-esque intro.

Not pictured: The catchiest J-Rock ever.

Dunno why but this picture gives me the creeps. It's the standard battle background too.
