Is there a comprehensive tutorial for making games?

Post by Diretooth »

I've been looking on the wiki for the program, yet I noticed that it's unfinished with a lot missing. Is this the only tutorial available, or are there others? If it's the only one, is anyone willing to assist me in learning the finer points of the program?

Heh, yeah, I haven't quite finished the new one on the wiki yet, though I really should get to work on it again.

As for assisting you in learning the finer points, it's best to experiment with it first. When you come across something you don't understand, then ask. You'll prolly get an answer relatively quickly.

And out of curiosity, what finer points did you have in mind?

There is no one big tutorial on everything, but instead there is a collection of tutorials on specific topics.

I suggest starting here:

http://rpg.hamsterrepublic.com/ohrrpgce/HOWTO

The tutorials are listed mostly in order, so start at the top and work your way down.

If anything doesn't make sense, just say so here, and maybe I (or someone here) can repair the confusing part of whatever tutorial you were reading, or maybe even write some new tutorial articles for topics that are not covered yet.

You're going to have to follow the old HOWTO as the new one is mostly incomplete. The Old HOWTO is complete, but it's old and doesn't cover a lot new features. It never did cover everything, but it did and still does cover all the basics so is a good introduction.

Ah, thank you. Something that covers a lot of things works better than that which covers few.

Well, I was going to make a tutorial on how to make games with the OHRRPGCE a while ago but stopped due to seemingly lack of care, I instead just started doing random tutorials on specifc things such as critical hits. I still have some set up in a list of what I plan on doing, if I can find the thread (and feel free to post specific requests if you want!), but I can do a general tutorial if you want me to. I'll probably cover things bit by bit sharing what I know how to do with the system, though I won't be going over plotscripting too much as I'm not an expert on it, though I really aught to sit down and learn myself it since I am kinda college-ing for programming right now...

Also, the HOWTO doesn't touch scripting at all. There's a separate Plotscripting Tutorial, which only covers the basics of writing and importing scripts and a few commands, but you should definitely know all of that before moving on to other things. After that you can skim parts of the plotscripting dictionary, read random articles (try the Plotscripting Category on the wiki) and look at example scripts.

If you want to learn advanced scripting, I strongly recommend the two tutorials by Mogri: Sidescrollers 101 and another one which appeared in HamsterSpeak, but I can't remember the topic or name. But really they are the only things ever written specific to HS which properly explain how to build complicated scripts out of small steps. And that's what programming is all about.

Don't forget that you also have F1 help support on every menu in Custom. Sometimes you can learn what you need just by reading that.

Here is that planning page I spake of: http://www.slimesalad.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5975
But I will plan on redoing my videos that are up there with more whimsy ♥
Besides that, I will go over a brief explanation of each menu to begin with, then I will sorta run over a few basic things and start with our game making from there.
Any question you have can be asked of me anywhere you can find me, and I will make the game available for download when completed.

Once upon a time before any full game shipped with the engine, the engine shipped with a couple RPG files and a basic tutorial on how to turn these RPGs into something more. If you download an uber old version of OHR you should be-able to dig up these RPG files and the tutorials. One shows basic enemy encounters using cute smiley faces. Another one uses sick-a$$ robots to show how to make them do an awesome Russian dance using plotscript. I used both of these waaaay back in the day when I first used the engine, and found them useful.

I think almost everyone in this community at some point or another wanted to make a tutorial for newcomers. Unfortunately nothing solid really came of it yet. Everybody these days usually has a family and an everyday life. Like what would your wife think if she walked into the room and saw you writing a tutorial for a game engine you used back in your late childhood? Most likely the very same game engine where you made a sprite of her so that you could have her as a companion character in your own JRPG, full with a romantic side-story. I think she'd seek a marriage counselor...

Anyone who'd freak out because of something like that was clearly not worth marrying in the first place...

I assume it was a joke.

Although if my wife caught me drawing sprites of her, I would probably never hear the end of the teasing :)
