Hello, introducing myself and my project.

Talk about things that are not making games here. But you should also make games!

Hello, introducing myself and my project.

Post by Ep1cLuis »

I'm making this post to introduce myself to the Slime Salad community.

My name is "Luis". That's actually a Spanish name!

I first came to the OHR community in early 2012. I believe I was in search of an RPG making engine in first place, but I got more than that. So I wanted to say "hi", and talk a bit about myself, and about a long-term OHRRPGCE based project that I've started building.

My native language is Spanish, and I have no idea how I ended learning English and making it my preferred language. I spend most of the time making intellectual property for a big project that I call "Ep1cQuest", or playing computer video games alone. This project is mainly based in my 3 biggest passions in my life: Programming, Writing and Music.

I consider myself way very different from my local peers. Although I'm a young teenager boy, I don't seem to interact very well with many people, and I spend most of my time alone. My style and likes are way very different from what I've seen, and I'm talented in fields that appear to be less common amongst this generation. None of my friends is capable of comprehending English and maybe not even making good use of the verb "is".

Well that's enough talk about me. I guess it gets boring to read all of that. (I like to write it down to express myself at least a little, as I don't actually talk much. I write much, thought)

Let's talk about Ep1cQuest - Proem Pack

Ep1cQuest - Proem Pack is an OHR exclusive game, which I made to introduce solid, formidable Ep1cQuest content for the first time before this year ended. It is name "Proem Pack" because it explains the backstory of mostly all iconic characters in the game.

This game promises to be different from other games in the following things:
  • - Story: The story, probably the strongest point, is designed to be realistic. Although not necessary to pay too much attention to them, there are very deep details about each character, including birth dates, vocabulary, and even genetic traits and blood type! The Ep1cQuest world is inspired in the real world, but its engineered to be different from it. First, there are two races, each native to two "continents", both being human-like but keeping various differences, being specific. A full implementation of chemistry can also be observed in various plans for Ep1cQuest games (currently, this game and the main game, written from scratch in Java).

    - Gameplay: I'm planning to implement artificial dialogue intelligence for various parts in the game. Also, the game features three main "Game Modes", with one being the main part. These are:
    • -"Proem Mode", where the player can select a character to play his backstory, controlling that character (Proems are assigned Difficulty, Genre and Length attributes. For example, some are easier to play through and are more cinematic, meanwhile others usually request more effort from the player and have less cutscenes. The Genre can vary from Comedy or Dramatic to Moody or Philosophical.)

-"Dungeoneering Mode", where the player enters in a "Dream" to face a totally different quest with less realism. In here, the player is encouraged to fight and use their wits in order to solve mysteries in engineered worlds called "Dungeons". It can be described as "Adding Storylines to The Legend of Zelda dungeons". This mode has a plot twist at the end, making it dramatic.

-"FFF Mode", or Fight For Fun mode, is a classic Ep1cQuest activity where the player just does organized contests between all the game's characters without any plot. The player is able to enjoy in tournaments or just request combat, all using a Hero unique to that place. Else than regular battling, there are also contents of other competitive minigames such as a special card game similar to poker, and unique to the Ep1cQuest world, which is playable thanks to some heavy plotscripts.

There will also be an "Extras" screen at the main menu.
    - Music: All the game's music will be MIDI based and everything will be edited by me before entering the game. The game needs the music in order to be complete, seriously. Some scenes are also musicals, by the way. Not all tracks are original, actually very few are, but I love editing MIDI files, and hence a lot of tracks will have variations, and maybe battles will have fanfares to be played before starting the actual battle theme loop. I like instrumental music a lot and I think it gives mood to life. Apparently, my hobby is opening some program called "Synthesia" in order to mess around with MIDI files to make them sound better or just to learn how to play something. That's what I do for most of these days actually (Holy crap, this says I have a total of 1046 MIDI files!)
I'm afraid I have no screenshots yet. Also, I'm not much of a graphical artist, so all I have up to now are tilesets and a lot of text regarding storylines and characters. And the music.

A psychology test said I'm a "creative-type" and thus my nature is that of a dreamy, extremely imaginative guy, so, I just want to let the community know that I'm a very open person and I'd love to make some friends here, too! Also, if you wish to know more about a specific thing of the game, like its characters or expected gameplay, everything is already planned, so please ask!

… I'm sorry for writing all this nonsense, sincerely. And if you read all that, thank you![/list]

Hello Luis and welcome to slimesalad! :D

Your project sounds interesting. If you need help with art or such you can make use of the work for hire thread: http://www.slimesalad.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5098.
Or you take a look in the OHR-wiki's sprite database for graphics.

How long hav you been working on that game?

Ah, Spain, I've not been there since...well, a long time ago.

You sound rather passionate about this game of yours, and that's something we highly endorse around here. :D

As for mostly keeping to yourself, I advise going out and trying to have friendships still as, speaking from experience, not having real-life kinds of friends will most likely wear down on one's psyche after a while, maybe even leading to insanity. :zombie:
Perhaps try to find friends with similar interests in your school? I'm sure you can easily start up a club of some sort that deals with programming and/or video games!

And lastly, I, the Meowskivich, welcome thee to our humble site; may you enjoy your stay.

P.S.
This happens to be Work-on-your-game Weekend, by the way, so feel free to post in the official thread if you work on your game!

Why, that's a hearty welcome. It makes me really happy to get such good feedback.

I've been working on this one for about 2 months. Mostly, I've done music and a lot of "concept text". These are mostly developed from a long ago due to lots of free time (Or lack of sleep). The whole Ep1cQuest idea started... like a year ago. I can't even remember why.

Thank you guys for lending your attention at my post...

Hi, welcome.

What is the pure-programmed game you mentioned? Is that further along? A previous version of the same game? A different game set in the same universe?

Yes, it's purely in the same universe. The version I'm currently working on is intended to have exclusive content on some iconic character's past and some interesting trivial facts. I've been focusing in the same characters and universe for a year already (Can't seem to get inspiration for any other sort of creative projects). But This project is coming first. The other one, being made from scratch, is taking a long while, although I've made various key engines that are necessary for any game.

Basically this game explains what happens before "Year 2021", which is the year where you start playing regular Ep1cQuest, using mostly adult characters.

Thinking that probably most people won't play Ep1cQuest - Proem Pack before they play the main game in the future, I wish to let this game make things in the main game's storyline clear. Makes it more exiting.

So, I'm gonna reveal a bit of the storyline of the first Proem I'm making right now, to show some progress in storytelling :) "A World Without Red".

"Enzo Fox, or just Enzo, is a male living in south Eonira (Also called Northern Continent. I got creative in making names.). The proem starts showing a dialogue between his parents about a divorce, and then continues showing what happened 12 years later. You start by controlling our protagonist in this story, just to realize he has protanopia (also called Daltonism or red-color-blindness.). You then enter in a dialogue with his mom, to realize that there are news of an upcoming snowstorm. (Known as the Food Crisis snowstorm from 1999) Soon after that, his mom enters in coma for an unknown reason. You are told to look for your dad, who could be anywhere in the continent (Our somewhere else?). You then enter in an epic journey trying to find out about your dad, your brother (who lives with him) and why is your mother so sick, all before you get frozen solid or starve to death because of the lack of food." - Probably gonna be the most adventure-like story. Also, while you control Enzo, you will be unable to see red, purple, and other colors properly. (It won't look ugly, but its made to challenge the player in some parts of the quest.)

Hmm, so are you going to draw alternative versions of all the necessary graphics, replacing red and purple with other colours? Or try to do so automatically? It's a quite interesting idea for a puzzle (assuming that's what you mean by challenge), but I won't expect you to get many different puzzles out of it.

I'm using palette functions for that part.

Also, there's a part of the quest where somebody special joins you, and there you find out that you can see a color that regular people can't. This becomes important further in the story, as in the start, the fact that red, purple and green are all seen as yellow hues, is only important to understand the story. This special companion can also be used as the party leader in order to be able to distinguish colors properly.

I also made a thread for this game's progress: http://www.slimesalad.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5826
