SI Paper dolls

Post by BMR »

Just had a random thought. How ridiculously difficult would it be to script Ultima VI:SI style paperdolls? I'm guessing it would most definitely make extensive use of slices. And you'd pretty much have to write a new inventory/equipping system from scratch. Anything else you'd need to do?

And no, I'm not planning on implementing this anywhere, just out of curiosity really.

That would be cool. You could use a slice collection to lay out the paperdoll and the armor templates, and then just draw a bunch of armor sprites to match the template sizes. Keeping track of the mapping between sprites and items would be the only difficult part, I think...

Well, except that you would want to see the paperdol as you use the equip menu, and there is no scripting in the equip menu... so yeah, I guess you would need to re-implement a bunch of stuff :(

I'll have to think about how it might be practical to allow scripting in the real equip menu...

I loved the Ultima series, and especially Ultima VII, where SI takes place. This would be a neat idea, although it would require a lot more drawing. Every Ultima after SI had paperdolls in some form or another. I am sure the newest one being released by Richard Garriott will also feature paperdolls... Actually, it's more of a "spiritual successor" as stupid EA still owns the rights to the Ultima name. The funny part is, that EA is also releasing a new Ultima game, it's going to be very interesting to see which one is more successful. No doubt Richard's will be, as hardcore fans know his name.

Lots of work then. Still, sounds doable enough with a lot of hard work. Definitely not something for Legacy though, I've got enough on my plate with it as it is, hehe. Hmm... Legacy 2 perhaps? Heh, but that's too far in the future to consider.

Ultima VII was my favorite of the series, and definitely the one I played the most, even up to this day at times (thank you Exult team).

I've heard of the new game Garriott is working on. I'm doubtful if it'll really be a worthy successor, but Richard Garriott is behind it, so fingers crossed. It's really sad that the Avatar's promise at Mythran's place in Ultima VIII never came to pass though. Ah well, there's still time though, who knows?
