You are going to need to get a different graphics editor, I don't think there is any way to avoid that, sorry.
If this is the problem, there is actually a very simple solution: Don't save your .bmp in 4 bit/16 colour mode. Old versions of Custom required 4-bit .bmp files but now accept any bitdepth. I guess there are a number of pages on the wiki that need updating.
Personally I'm a happy Grafx2 user, though I use the builtin editors just as much. It doesn't have that much support for animations but it has lots of features that make things like shading and dithering very fast.

wait... even sprites?
*goes to test it*
Good lord! How did I miss this feature? Wonderful!
Seeing as how this thread is back at it, I thought I'd share all my old graphics tilesets. Anyone can feel free to use/manipulate them in their own game. (You may have to convert them from .png to .bmp due to photobucket automatically converting images to that format).

Go right ahead. Also I'm curious, where on the wiki would you be uploading it? Is there a tileset section on there. I've never really noticed, I guess I only use the wiki for the FAQs.
EDIT: After a bit of looking I found the free tileset page in the wiki. Seems pretty cool. You can definitely post my stuff in there for others to use.

"Old graphics tilesets"? Does that mean you scrapped all these tiles when moving to the new art style? Too bad, I'm slighty tempted to try to make a game continuing on with these (I won't be)... but actually they're already a it inconsistent in style to begin with.
I'm curious to know what those white-and-gray mask-like tiles were for.
Waaaaaaaaait a minute. Am I reading that right when it says that each animation frame is 24x34? Does this mean enlarged walkabout sprites may be in our near future?

Yep these are my old tiles. Do with them what you will. Not sure what you mean by mask-like tiles?
TMC wrote:I meant the ones at the right hand side of the top right tileset. They look like they could be coastlines.
Oh yes. That's right. They are tile for a coast line. My game doesn't really use traditional colours for things, so the water isn't blue and the beach isn't goldy-brown. I wanted it to look like the ocean was really polluted and depressing looking. There are so many coast line tiles because I had a good animation going for them, (I think waiting about 5-7 ticks between each tile gave good animation results).
All the sprites in Wandering Hamster are GPL, but GPL is designed for code, and isn't great for sprites. I'll go on record here that I consider <a href="https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by ... ve-Commons Attribution-ShareAlike</a> to be close enough to GPL that I am happy with all Wandering Hamster art being used under those terms.
Oh boy! Now I can make that Wandering Hamster Monsters game I've been holding off since I first played Wandering Hamster and Dragon Warrior Monsters the night I accidentally ate my sisters Hamster...
Edit after reading more posts: Regarding using The GIMP, I made a video a while back that shows how you can use the palette and such from your game to make drawing easier. You can find the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7JqTc3ikos There's no audio, so just, ya know, follow along.
