The OHR open source sprite/tilemap database.

Talk about things that are not making games here. But you should also make games!

The OHR open source sprite/tilemap database.

Post by Spoonweaver »

This thread will be the current sprite database.Posting a sprite or tilemap on this thread that you made means that you are willing to let others use that sprite or tilemap however they choose.

The idea to make a sprite database stemmed from another thread and I feel that moving that discussion here would be a good idea.

So, let's see those open source graphics. I know there have been some posted before, but try to repost them here too. I'll start by making all the graphics for Questicle Open source. (Though I'm not sure if they'll ever be used.)
Image
Also, let's list all the known open source graphics made by OHR'ers ( with and for the OHR ) here too.
I'll go ahead and mention Vikings of Midgard to get things started.

All the work in this thread will be considered licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License.
Unless otherwise stated.

Righto, here we go.

These should (in theory) all be ready to import into Custom with almost no modifying. The only change is that they use a modified version of Neo's Better Palette (the first black color has been changed to magic pink).

It would be helpful to be specific about which type of open source these sprites are. In particular, are they <a href="https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/">Public Domain</a> or <a href="https://creativecommons.org/choose/">Cr ... Commons</a>?

All the sprites in Wandering Hamster are GPL, but GPL is designed for code, and isn't great for sprites. I'll go on record here that I consider <a href="https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by ... ve-Commons Attribution-ShareAlike</a> to be close enough to GPL that I am happy with all Wandering Hamster art being used under those terms.

These are oversimplified explanations, but I think they will help:

Public Domain

Anybody can do anything with it, no limits

CC Attribution

Anybody can do anything with it, but only if they include your name in the credits or the readme.

CC No-Derivatives

People can use it, but they can't change it in any way.

CC Non-Commercial

People can use it however they like, but only if their project is a free game

CC ShareAlike

People can use it, but if they make changes to the sprite, they have to release the change version under Sharelike also.

Unported
When you see this at the end of a CC licence, it just means that the license is intended to apply to all countries, not just the United States.

The different CC options can be combined in several different ways. In my personal opinion, <a>Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported (CC BY 3.0)</a> is the best for most purposes. I might change Wandering Hamster's art to that after I finish it, but I will decide that later.

A bunch of floor tiles this time. Again, these use the default with transparent black replaced with magenta. Most of the base ground tiles only use 4-6 colors, but with all the shading and lighting effects each set uses around 10-16 colors.

These need to be edited into a tilemap, so it's up to the game developer to mix and match for different areas. The first blue/turquoise one shows how the tiles match up with one another.

A lot of these are already in BMRT, but I thought it might be a good idea to compile everything into this thread as well. I've also added a few new tiles near the bottom. There are 3 wicker/wood sets, 4 cobblestone sets, 3 sheet metal sets, and 2 metal grate sets.

holy taders, that's a lot of shiny tile sets

and I suppose I'll release mine under creative commons attribution unported. sounds dandy to me.

honestly, though I do like to be accredited to my work, I won't hold it against someone unless they've the gall to claim something I've made as their own.

Wall tiles this time. These will (in theory) mesh perfectly with the shadows of the floor tiles I've made. Both use a template (the turquoise set) which makes it so all the tiles follow specific lighting and shadow-ing presets to ensure that they all play nicely together.

Like the floor tiles, hese need to be edited into a tilemap, so again, it's up to the game developer to mix and match for different areas. The first blue/turquoise one shows (hopefully) how the tiles match up with one another.

Each set is exactly 16 colors and all work with the modified default palette (magenta as the transparent color)

Again, a lot of these are already in BMRT, and again, they're here so tat all resources can be located in a single thread. There are around 11 or 13 new sets in this batch.

Would anyone mind if I take whatever images are posted in this thread and add them to this page on the wiki?

Cool! Those are nice tilesets! Very generous of you.

I also like that mimic chest.

Yes, it would be great if you put them on the wiki. It would be nice to have a gallery of previews (like the screenshots page).

Personally I think applying software licenses (especially the GPL) to art doesn't make a lick of sense, and the FSF agrees.

I'm not even totally sure about how it applies it to game assets. For example, you could sell a game, and also separately release the code under the GPL. But you couldn't incorporate anyone else's changes to the code into your paid version because then you could only (re-)distribute the whole thing under the GPL, right? Regardless of that, maybe I'm crazy, but immediately GPLing the code for any game I ever sell sounds like a great idea. It would make it a better game.

Yeah, I wasn't sure how GPL would work for game resources. For art though, I think Creative Commons still applies, but I'm not a lawyer (or even well versed in legal stuff) so I wouldn't really know.

Ah, and how should I handle adding the stuff to the wiki? Is there a way to do <img src="http://blahblah.png"> using Media Wiki code? Or should I just download the graphics from this page and reupload them to the wiki?

Yes, Creative Commons is designed for all types of art broadly.

Question for the people who have graphics resources on this page, would it be ok if I downloaded those files and then posted the images on that page?

Ah, and if you're reading this: Fenrir, would it be ok with you if I extracted the graphics from Vikings and uploaded it to the wiki?
