Epic Winter Holiday Game Contest

Post by Chronoboy »

Having an entire year to create a Holiday game? It better be one damn good game. :)

The theme is the winter Holiday season, but it doesn't need to be full of cheer. Take Family Guy and American Dad for example, both of their recent Christmas episodes were awesome! It was full of humor of which was to kill Santa. They also both had a Christmas story behind them. Stewie never got what he wanted for Christmas for many years and demanded to meet Santa and kill him in the North Pole.

Stewie ended up getting into more than he could chew on, an Epic Christmas adventure!

Prizes for this contest are still to be determined, it depends on how much interest this contest will spark. Remember, you do have an entire year to develop and build your Ultimate Winter Holiday RPG. Have at it!

The contest will be managed in my contest management website, once my contest management app is done. Here is the current page for the contest, which also includes the deadline for submissions:

Also any feedback on the contest management site would be wonderful, it's still in beta and subject to change a heck of a lot before it's done.

UPDATE: Due to popular demand and that some of us may celebrate Hanukkah or another major Winter Holiday, the contest has changed slightly.

Learn CSS :(

I can get on board with the idea of a year-long contest, but why the Christmas theme? It's odd to start working on a Christmas game in January.

Heart of the OHR 2012 should be wrapping up towards the end of the year aswell, if I remember correctly.

Not that any of this matters... the world's gonna explode before Christmas anyhow! But either way I may try to do this one, but I'll probably be busy with HotOHR, although it's mainly due to me never working on anything. Christmas theme sounds awesome though!

Don't forget that HotOHR 2012 is cross platform. You could do this Christmas game as your HotOHR game if you'd like. The problem is that Heart of the OHR ends in November, not December, so it's up to you.

Based on experience, I have a hard time imagining anyone starting any work on this contest before November. So, this may be a good time to recruit some newbies who don't know how this community operates yet, and who would be more than ecstatic to make an awesome Christmas game early. ;)

If you want better luck, you may want to revise this to a "holiday" game, where any and all holidays are up for grabs, and that the games would get credit for holiday scenes. People are more likely to create games based on whatever theme is popular at the moment, since their minds will be on it.

But what do I know?

A Holiday theme does sound better, since not everybody celebrates Christmas.

The reasoning behind starting so early is to give a large amount of time for the game to be developed. I am sure major studios who pump out Holiday themed games start developing it early on in the year, so that they have enough time to plan, develop, and test the game before it reaches the masses. I couldn't imagine a big box holiday game being developed in 1 month... It would be impressive, but would also lack any of the polish said company is known for.

I'm not very graphically enabled, I have a huge disability in graphic design. :( I'm more of a programmer, and I am actively looking for someone in the community with HTML/CSS talent to spruce up the website design for me with a nice hamster themed template. :)

A hamster-themed template would be graphic design. I'm talking about pure CSS issues like setting your page margins to zero. Spacing is your friend.
