The most interesting port of OHR would be...

Talk about things that are not making games here. But you should also make games!

The most interesting port of OHR would be...

Post by Chronoboy »

Out of pure curiosity, if you could port the OHR engine to any platform in the entire world, what would that platform be?

For me, if I had the technical knowledge, I would port the engine to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. :)

This way, where ever a SuperNES emulator runs, so will my game built in OHR. :) SNES emulators are built for everything nowadays, from smartphones to set-top boxes.

What would be your preferred platform of choice to port OHR to? It doesn't have to be realistic, as this thread is just for fun to spark some imagination.

I am somewhat tempted to at least try and render a ModeX image on a SuperNES to see how it will work. I'm currently reading this site to see how a SNES is programmed(DISCLAIMER: I am not porting it, just playing with it's files):

I would port it to the Nintendo DS, having the top screen use the engine's usual display and the bottom screen have the keyboard for textual input.

Actually, since we're being completely unrealistic here, I'd want to make it into a broader engine - one with the RPG features of the OHR built-in, but also basic platformer, brawler, fighting, and side-scrolling shooter stuff pre-made and ready to use (scripting would wind up having to be handled a little differently anyway). Then have a memory card to insert into the GBA slot for saving the games (playing saved games as standalone GBA cartridges optional).

Not counting an ancient hand-me-down which I never used (I think I sent two text messages with it), I got my first cellphone this month. It's an android. So an android port would be at the top of my wish-list. Wish those dang OHR devs would hurry up!

This is the right answer (or iOS) since all of the other suggestions so far would be even more niche ports of an already niche product. No one would ever use them that wasn't already an OHR user.

I'd love an Android port of OHR...especially the editor. I would buy an Android tablet for that alone. And to be able to play OHR games on my phone...so amazing.

Android does have a severe lack of good RPGs, so this would be an amazing addition to the app catalog.

Really? I wasn't expecting that. Using Custom without a proper keyboard would be difficult -- I wasn't really planning to attempt a port.

I know James has already tried programming for Android.

Yeah, this is mostly wishful thinking anyway. I just love the idea of working on a game all the time. I would use a tablet to play test and draw graphic on the bus and sync with a real computer for the real meat of the game.

I too would love to see an Android port with the ability to easy package both game and your RPG file into one nice APK file for easy market distribution.

There are some RPGs on the market, but all the good ones are all pay-for ones. I'm sure OHR was compiled for Android or even iOS(although Apple store will not allow, as it's technically a VM/Engine, but never know), plenty of hardcore RPG gamers would download them to try them out, if they like the game, well, it's word of mouth from there on to make your new shiny game seen by millions on the App Store. :)

There are alot of quality games in the OHR community that many hardcore RPG gamers would love to play, but just don't really know about. Indie games are making a huge impact these days on many hardcore players. People are caring less that's it's Square Enix and more for the actual gameplay and price of the product.

On that note, the SDL libraries do work on Android, and this may or may not make it easier to re-build the engine for that platform. FreeBASIC really needs to make new build targets or just compile directly to C code or something to then compile on whichever C compiler the user wants to target.

Android does have DosBox, but the DOS port of OHR is widely unused. :( Or this would work perfectly with phones with full-querty keyboards.

For the PC, I'd be interested in a C++ port over the current Freebasic version. For other devices, I'd be most interested in a port to mobile phones (since I don't use any other gaming console). I have an Android phone, but a J2ME port would allow playing and even creating OHR games on any mobile, which would be fun :)
