Glad you like it! I've got something going now that I think sounds like a world map, but I won't have too much time to work on it until Monday. Hopefully I'll have it uploaded by then or Tuesday.
Chronoboy wrote:That sounds really good. Is there a possibility that you could write a HamsterSpeak article on writing custom music and pointers on how to build a proper beat? I think this kind of article would be really good for HamsterSpeak as there really isn't any articles like this.
Thanks! And maybe I can write something... I'm not really a composer (I have no musical training and can't read sheet music, I just hit keys until something nice comes out) but I'll think on it.

Musagi is great because it's very tuned towards non-musical folk like myself. I especially like the "dissonance" meter at the top, because you can just play keys and it will tell you if they don't go together. It helps to get the hang of it more naturally. I'd recommend using Musagi if you want to get more familiar with creating music in general. He also has a pretty good tutorial here: http://www.drpetter.se/tutorial_musagi1.html

I've written some tracks, if any of them seem suitable, feel free to use them. They're in .ogg format, so you'll have to download them and play them in a compatible player or the OHR. They've all been cut to loop seamlessly as well.

Finished this track this morning:

It sounds like overworld music to me, but again feel free to use it however you like. I'm listening to a bunch of Dragon Quest music right now, so that is probably coming through. It should loop perfectly.

I'm going to keep composing random music (creative burst yay) but let me know which tunes you still need and I can make something in that direction.

Thanks TheCube! Its now my overworld music.

I have a message sent off to 8bifit just to check to see if this is allowed. I hope he gets back to me...i'll be devastated if he says it isn't.

EDIT: I editted more things into the main post.

And by the way, thanks to all the contributors!

If worse comes to worst, I would think that you can at least use my music as I'm making it specifically for your game. That's not ripped, just requested.

If worst comes to totally even worse than that, maybe listing your musicians as contributors/partners/something for, like, reasons of the contest would work? I don't really care about prize money at all, so that wouldn't be an issue for me in any case...

New song, yay:

Image

This is a REAL Forest Village this time. Yay. I like this one pretty well.

I also made this weird song, which is apparently a "round" like "row row row your boat." I can't find a use for it, but feel free to use it if you have one:

Finally, I updated the Walking Synths song, because the MP3 had some weird pops and clicks in it. It sounds better this time to me. I also took the opportunity to change a couple of tiny things. Here's the new link:

Not sure when I'll have time to work on anything in the next coupla weeks, so this might be it until the end of the year. :gonk: I'll let you know if that changes.

Thanks again, TheCube!

I also downloaded Musagi for myself, at long last. Maybe I can get some of my own songs...

PROTIP: Save often, Musagi has a tendency to crash occasionally, and at the worst possible moment.

If you're looking for authentic NES sounds, use the XNES instrument and don't do more than four channels at a time in your music: two square, one triangle, and one noise. I haven't been using the noise channel at all since I'm basically trying to rip off Dragon Quest...

For my sound effects, I simply use Bfxr.net. It works pretty good.

Oh, sorry, I meant if you want your songs to sound authentically NES-y, do what I said. I use bfxr for sound effects too.

Funny thing: sfxr, the precursor to bfxr, was created by the same guy who did Musagi. Random knowledge for you.

Ahaha!

I made my own Cavern Exploration theme.
It's really...creepy.

EDIT: Graahhh! I don't know how to convert it to OGG or MP3. It's either WAV, SMU, or just a plain file, which the OHR editor does not like. How can I convert it?

Yay! New music!

I use Audacity to convert my songs to MP3s, and you can also go straight to OGG. If you do decide to convert it to MP3, you'll also want to download the LAME plugin here.

By the way, before you record it as a wave in Musagi, try and increase the Master volume (near the top left) as high as you can without having any clipping issues. You can tell it's clipping when the little sound meters at the top hit the rightmost light. That way, you'll have good volume that matches the other songs.

Also, I use Tindeck to upload my songs. It's nice and free. I'd be curious to hear what you've made in Musagi. :D

@TheCube: Is there any way to insert notes via playing them on the keyboard?

You can record into any part by clicking the Record button above the play button. It'll start recording immediately unless you have the metronome on, which is the dial in the lower right of the main screen. If the metronome is on, you get four beats before it starts recording.

Sadly there's a little bit of delay so it's not exactly accurate. You'll have to move the notes to where you want them afterwards, probably.

If you hit the keyboard while you have a song part open, it'll light up that note white to help you find it. You probably figured this out already, but just in case.
