shakeyair's facelift contest!

Post by shakeyair »

ok ok ok... slow down. this isn't a real contest. well, sort of.

i love the OHRRPGCE. i, however, have lost all motivation for writing stories and textboxes and balancing battles etc... i keep starting games, getting really excited about how they look... and then quitting as soon as i have to balance stats, or set tags, or make conversations.

it dawned on me that this is exactly the opposite problem most of the community has.

so where does the contest come in? well. i want people to submit games that they are making/have made, and i'll pick one. what does that game get? a complete graphical overhaul, bottom to top, top to bottom.

clearly, this is NOT a fair contest. it is entirely based on my opinion, and not even definitely my opinion on 'best game' but my opinion on 'this game would be the most fun to do graphics for.'

rules:

-submit any/all games you want me to consider.
-write a short synopsis in this thread.

if there is a feature improved version of a game (you have worked on a game since the version uploaded and have improved it in anyway) then please show me that version. PM me for email.

i am very picky. i think everything should have a lot of polish. if there are parts acting finicky or that i don't like the user experience of, it bothers me a lot more than most people. there is a definite possibility of me picking a game but having a short list of "i want to see this work more smoothly" or something along those lines. if you are not ok with making MINOR changes to anything, please make a note of that.

:)

Also, though it shouldnt matter because I will be updating all graphics: I will definitely be using a custom palette, either the one i have been working on or the one VampiDucki recently posted.

EDIT: ALSO. I WILL BE DOING VERY DETAILED EXPLANATIONS OF HOW I AM REVAMPING YOUR GRAPHICS FOR MY OLD TUTORIAL THREAD. SO YOU HAVE TO BE OKAY WITH GETTING YOUR GRAPHICAL WORK EXAMINED UNDER A VERY CRITICAL EYE FOR ALL TO SEE.

this should prove to be very helpful for the original author of the game, as well as the whole community, but i realized maybe someone who was okay with getting new graphics on their game would not be okay with an in depth critique of the original graphics. so yes, if you enter this, you are also agreeing to this condition.

Some things I have done:

I like your graphics and would love to some day have you help out with maptiles for a project I'm going to be working on next year but until then I think this is a really fun idea for a contest.

Since no one else has gone yet, I'll put up my game. Here's the story (is this what a synopsis is?)

The Story So Far- Evil Unleashed

2145 A.D. -Enter the United Aerospace Corporation.

Backed by a powerful military force, the United Aerospace Corporation begins experiments on a faraway desert moon named Tei Tenga. These experiments plan to open vast holes to other dimensions- perhaps to another alien world for the first contact with outer life.

For a matter of a few years, the UAC has developed two major bases, as well as several colonizations on the surface of the moon. These major bases are located at the poles of both the Tei Tenga Lightside and Tei Tenga Darkside, observing the anomalies at each point.

Day in and Day Out, new marines are being sent to the moon to occupy the area while the tests proceed. Everything goes well, until contact is reached after the dimensional portals open at both sides of the Tei Tenga moon. Monstrosities pour from the gaping holes, killing everyone in sight. Everything goes downhill from there, as a dark story starts to unfold...

---

The story for this game was revised after a brief meeting with Tom Hall, who made the original story for Doom, on which this game is based on. The new storyline sequence is: Evil Unleashed, Through Hell and Back, Knee Deep in the Dead.

The Game should be labeled under Doom: Evil Unleashed in the Games section. DL the one that says it's the corpse test version.

Sounds like fun!

I know exactly which game to submit...but, i'll go into more detail later. Right now, its 12:16 AM, and Me needs sleep badly.
The game...is my newbie game, Grayscale. More details when I have rest.

You're welcome to give Tales of the New World 1 a go if you're super-ambitious. I'm not adverse to changing things about it if I think it improves the game, but one serious problem with it versus your style is that, as it is currently, the interiors of houses in towns are visible along with the exteriors (like the old Dragon Warrior games). The amount of script changes and playtesting necessary to change this (on top of the graphical facelift) will be daunting. But I'm willing to do it.

Alright, time for my game.
The game is [game]Grayscale[/game]. It is what you could consider my newbie game. The second demo is most recent. It has no password, so you can see everything in it. The plot, you want? I started typing it out, but it certainly wasn't short. I could PM it to you, Shake, if you want. Be warned, however, it is quite long.

Why don't you just get a writer and make a game that way, seems more worthwhile than this stuff.

i dont see how this is any more or less worthwhile than doing that? plus, most collaborative games don't amount to much, someone loses interest or whatever. im already taking a chance on a collaborative game with Mogri's gameboy project, and two would be pushing my luck, i think.

i enjoy making graphics, and i think updating a game would be a fun challenge. i guess i think that if im working on a (at least) primarily finished game, that i can work on it with confidence that im doing something definitely worthwhile.

i will say though, a 30 hour game is probably a bit much... though i have a LOT to comment on some of the different things you have done graphically, msw188 (not all bad things!)

i guess thats also a valid point:

i will be posting side by side comparisons and talk in depth about how i'm improving things, why things work and why they don't, etc. This (i hope) will prove to be immensely helpful to improving the community's graphic ability as a whole. In fact, this whole idea was brought on by me being unsure of what to talk about in my graphics tutorial thread. (which is somewhere around here? page 3 or so now maybe) Updating a game makes it easy: "hey see this place? it has good blah blah blah but is kind of blah blah blah. heres how i tackled those issues and refined things blah blah blablabla" etc, talking about concepts in a more natural way whenever they happen to show up.

Hey, I'd love to hear any comments you have! Not to mention how far you made it into the game, and thus how much of my graphical 'timeline' you saw (some of my later things improve a bit graphically, in my opinion). If it makes more sense, you can email me rather than clog up your contest thread. My email is just my user name here at gmail dot com.

I also saw that the recent version of my game was DL'd some time ago. Does that mean that I'm getting more players, or that yer lookin over it? Either way, I give thanks. Whatever could be done to improve upon the game would be much appreciated. Also, if you could along with MSW above, I'd also like to hear of any progress, if any. Again, thanks for any changes or comments you have posted.

I'm wanting to work on my maps again soon. Is there any way I could do that and at the same time, when you get the graphically enhanced version to me, that I could replace the old tiles with enhanced tiles? I'm assumin' this I could probably do...

i am not going to pick a game to work on for probably another week or two. i want the chance to play through them and let people who don't come to the forums as often have a chance to submit something.

at that time, i will announce the game i chose and talk to the author about how things are going to go.

this is one reason why i would prefer a finished game, in that there won't be any problems with the .rpg file.

Alright, I'd like you to take a look at the old, finished version of this game. I'm still working on new one, and it's not very far (partly because I like giving the player choice). MSW's game is bigger and more complete, even for a complete game, and really could use the facelift more I guess.

So...what's all going on with this thing so far? Is this still going on, or is it kaput?
