Ah, Baldur's Gate 2. I only played the first one.
The idea of a balance between good and evil is worse than the idea of neutrality to begin with. Evil is, in fact, only when a good thing is twisted to do something outside of goodness. You're meant to be good at all times; 50% is not a passing grade.
I can see the idea of someone being apathetic/indifferent to good and evil, in which case he'd drift toward being mildly evil. People are basically evil, as becomes apparent when you look at what they do when they think they can get away with it.
