The disturbing tracks

Talk about things that are not making games here. But you should also make games!

The disturbing tracks

Post by Baconlabs »

For reasons unknown I am pooling together bizarre, disturbing music tracks from video games.
I have lots of examples so far, but my memory is bad and I'm probably forgetting lots of good ones. So!
Post that one VGM that gave you nightmares. (Sound effects can count, too.)

What I've got:
-Key Cavern (Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening)
-Shakedown Schooner (Wario Land: Shake It!)
-Castle Bleck (Super Paper Mario)
-Any Ganon Chord (Zelda)
-Nightmare (Castlevania III)

-Whatever the hell this is
-Shadow Temple (Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time)
-Old Hero (Demon's Souls)
-The Totaka Screech
-Save Point (Super Smash Bros. Brawl)

-Sea of Eden (Earthbound)
-Moonside (Earthbound)
-Freaking anything Giygas (Mother)

EDIT: Fixed! Thanks, Spoons.

[s]How odd. All of my text got eaten, but it still shows up when I edit or quote myself.
OH WELL here's a consolation prize.[/s] (fixed, here's a creepy picture)

You mistyped a url function. I dunno why it deleted ALL the text, but ..well it did. Here's your post, fixed.

I'm not sure how to find it, but the scariest NES sound for me was the little ditty that played when your Dragon Warrior saved data had gotten somehow corrupted, and the game was polite enough to tell you with a little screen that you just got slimed.

"Unhappy Song" from Trigun

Pretty much anything by Doron Sadja (that link leads to one of his more calm and approachable tracks) more at http://www.shinkoyo.com/symbol/

I heard this very same sound when I began playing Dragon Quest 5 on the Nintendo DS. It sent chills up my spine.

Bump.
I just found something weird. Something really really weird.
A while ago I downloaded the raw music files from Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and just listened to my favorite tracks. On re-inspection, though, I noticed some extra files that didn't belong. It turns out there were "Bad" versions of existing tracks that just sound... off. EDIT: These were removed from the game, of course.

Files found:
>File Select (Bad) - A minor version of the file select theme, with an eerie vocal track thrown in contrast with the rest.
>Battle (Bad) - Mostly a re-instrumentation of the original battle theme that, oddly, sounds like something from Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire.
>Hoohoo Village (Bad) - Has a thicker bass sound that's actually kinda catchy and replaces the first melody. The rest is minor-ized.
>Woohoo Hooniversity (Bad) - FREAKING CREEPY
>Teehee Valley (Bad) - A minor version of the main guitar riff that is loopy and boring.

My take:

Key Cavern - Wow, was that irritating. Seriously. Who wrote that?
Any Ganon Chord - MY EARS!
Nightmare - Never played it, but now I'm gonna.

Whatever the hell this is - Ugh. That's all I'm gonna say. Ugh.
Shadow Temple - Drums got on my nerves, quick. The rest was awesome.
Save Point - Really? I though this was cool...

Sea of Eden - Ow. Seriously. Whoever wrote this was very, very, very high at the time.
Moonside - Is this even MUSIC???
Freaking anything Giygas - Agreed.

When a Witch is nearby - Actually, anything from that game. Cool, but freaking disturbing.

Doron Sadja: Weird, but not really scary. Just an annoying cacophony.

Everything else was just kinda... there. Not really scary or painful for me.

I've never heard this, probably because I've never been that unfortunate. Is it on Youtube?

I have been trying to find this one too. It never happened to me back when I played DW1. (Although I am curious now what would happen if I dug my cartridge out of the garage and tried it out. Is my old save game still on there, almost 20 years later?)

Yeah, I remember it just being a little sound byte along with a text box saying that the saved data had been corrupted, and then the game would start normally and you'd have to start over. The only game I remember for certain this happening on was Dragon Warrior 2, although I think it happened in 3 as well. I searched a bit with google, and couldn't find anything. I never owned the first one on console, so I don't know if it could happen on that game.

Now that is an interesting thought. I know where my NES and cart are, so maybe next time I'm home I'll try this little experiment out.

I made an attempt to manually mangle Dragon Warrior 1 a save-ram file for the fceu NES emulator, but I couldn't trigger it (my manglings either had no effect, or erased the save data entirely)

Although maybe DW1 doesn't do it. I'll try again with DW2 some time.

It does. This has actually happened to me before, and I've never owned DW2 or 3.
