Top 30 Duty

Post by JSH357 »

Hey all,
I've had a pretty good time running the Top 30 over the past few years, but I would really like to give somebody else the opportunity to run it. If we continue on the schedule I had going, December should be the next HamsterSpeak issue to feature a list.

Is anyone interested in taking the reigns? I would be happy to offer the formulas (and the spreadsheet) I use to keep track of the scores, or you'd be free to come up with your own method. Enter the wild and woolly world of Statistics!

The only thing I ask is that this list still remain what it is--that is, the Top 30 OHR Games of all time, as it originally was and how I kept it. Some users have expressed interest in focusing only on recent games; I'm not opposed to a separate listing for those statistics (I encourage it), but it seems more like a year-end deal to me.

Anyway, consider this an application thread. Please PM me or respond if you are interested. Naturally, anyone is free to start polling whenever and however they like, but if you want my official "baton pass," I'd be happy to give it.

I voted to have a top 30 of mostly recent games, but thinking it through even if we did do all time, most older games would get phased out due to taste in games changing and many new users.

But doing one that's mostly recent, could open up for a separate top 30 for Classic/Older OHR games.

I never understood why you did this like two times a year. We're a very small community, and the list only changes because people forget what they voted for before.

I won't vote this time, I didn't vote last time. I just think this should be an annual thing, or every other year. We don't release THAT many games a year that are worth playing.

Nobody's forcing you to vote. If you're not going to anyway, why should it be changed to meet your specifications?

Excuse me for having an opinion.

I would vote, if I thought that the Top 30 was justified in some way multiple times a year. Last year I proposed an idea, and you kinda took an ego trip and weren't even open to suggestion. It was "this is my idea, I'm doing it, you can vote or you can go to hell" kinda thing.

Surlaw already runs a "best games of the year" list in HamsterSpeak. Making the Top 30 only count for recent games would be pretty redundant in that light, don't you think?

You're entitled to your opinion, but I really can't see the logic in having two lists that show the same thing, and to be frank, the Top 30 does get a fair number of votes as it is (about the same number as the last year-end poll).

Also, nobody is stopping you from only voting for newer games, which would improve their standings. What exactly is the problem with comparing new and old? I don't see anyone else besides me whining about the abundance of articles in Hspeak discussing old games, so clearly they do have value.

Anyway, this is a pretty weird debate. Can we stick to the subject at hand here? I do not plan on running another poll.

Well, since I have ended up working from home since my move, I will have more free time to work on stuff like this. If anyone is interested, I'm still willing to pass on the duty, but I can try and scramble up a list this winter. Issue 32 or 33 I suppose.

Hey, ya'll! New guy from Castle Paradox. I notice we're tied on the voting...

Here's my take: I understand why we have the polls. Heck, I only found out there were more games than just Vikings of Midgard BECAUSE of the polls. But I do not believe we need them as often as they are being given.

I agree with Newbie Newtype. Why don't we have a poll for new games yearly, and a poll for all games bi-yearly? It makes sense. To me, at least...

Unless my memory's bad, we only do the top 30s yearly anymore.
