TERRIBLE GAMES CONTEST - 2008 - EVILSPOCK - VOTING

Post by Fenrir-Lunaris »

The time has come to vote upon the various entries in this year's Terrible Games Contest.

Anyone may vote on the games, and may rate each one on a scale of 1 (awful) to 5 (best). What constitutes a bad or good "terrible" game is your decision, as is the nature of the contest. Based on the theme of this contest, you must take into account whether the game's creator successfully met the contest's theme. I will not be checking to see whether your score is an accurate reflection of that, or upon what other criteria you have for voting the way you've chosen. As always, comments on each submission are welcome and ultimately helpful to the contestants. Your score sheet should look something like this:

Surf's Up Yuk by RedMaverick Zero (Imitating Surlaw)- #
Final Fantasi XXX Legaci by Hachi-Roku / Eternal Hachi (Imitating SDHawk) - #
Alexandria by Ronin Catholic (imitating the Danielson Bros) - #
superawesomegameyayz by The_dude257 / Blue Train - (No apparent Imitation) #
Super Walrus House by Surlaw (Imitating JSH) - #

If you fail to vote on any one game, I will assume you DID NOT play it, and accordingly give it an automatic score of 3. If enough people fail to play one particular game, it may quickly rise to the top of the voting and be a declared the winner. Consequently, it is in your own interests to play each game, even if only for a little bit, so you can judge it yourself.

People who are NOT regular OHRRPGCE game creators are free to join AND vote. This means that PEOPLE FROM OUTSIDE THE INCLUSIVE COMMUNITY ARE FREE TO JOIN IN THE FUN. The only requirement for an "outsider" to vote is that they MUST register an account on any of the previously listed websites (Castle Paradox, Slime Salad, Surlaw Forums).

You may only vote ONCE. Yes, you can vote for your own game. I am also shortening the time allowed to Vite by a week, so that Surlaw will have time to announce a winner for this month's "Hamsterspeak" magazine. As a result, you have until May 8th to vote.

The winner gets $50. So VOTE.

Surf's Up Yuk - 4/5
It was definitely the most fun game in the contest, but it wasn't a terrible game and it didn't really feel like a Surlaw game aside from the cast. I was hoping for more of a Surlaw-style game, but this felt like an RMZ game starring the cast of Walthros. Good stuff, but it wasn't the best response to the theme.

FFXXXL - 3/5
A decent response to the theme, but it was less terrible than FFXXX and too short to really give a lot of points.

Alexandria - 2/5
Not bad really, but it was hard to tell if he was imitating their style or not.

superawesomegameyayz - 1/5
Um, it was certainly terrible. But it didn't respond to the theme at all.

Super Walrus House - 5/5
While RMZ's entry is the best, this one is the best response to the theme. Very JSHy, but it also maintains Surlaw's style, which is nice. Also pretty funny. I should have thought to use Zoidberg as the host in House 3.

Surf's Up Yuk - 4
Final Fantasi XXX Legaci - 4
Alexandria - 2
superawesomegameyayz - 1
Super Walrus House - 5

I actually liked Surf's Up Yuk the most by far, but it also didn't really imitate Surlaw except for using his characters, everything else about it was pure RMZ. FFXXX was the best at imitation of course, but there's not much to it. Walrus House had the best combination of imitation and actually being good (though still in a "terrible" way).

superawesomegameyayz 1/5 - Fairly bad. But not immersive! It's like if you give someone a bicycle with only one wheel on it: sure it's a bad bike, but there's no joke to it.

Alexandria 4/5 - This, on the other hand, is if you give someone a bike with a loosened back wheel and don't tell them.

Surf's Up Yuk 1/5 - What are you doing here? You're like a double Ph.D who's working as a day laborer. This is too meta.

Super Walrus House 4/5 - Less meta, more great mirror-universe filling, and for that I'm able to give it almost full marks, despite the production values.

Final Fantasi XXX Legaci 3/5 - There's one thing I'll agree with, and that this game isn't nearly long enough. Otherwise, zvarri!

My voting points are the same as JSH's, but I have different comments on each of the games.

Surf's Up Yuk - 4/5
The most fun by far, and it made the TGC worth something to bring this game out. Like everyone else though, I agree this feels like an RMZ game with a Walthros cast, and Yuk Deluxe makes me think of Gargan?

Also, what really bugged me is the surfing sequence. The wave is moving, but everything else is standing still, and it's not that bad but attention to detail would've been great. Might want to make the rest of the water look like it's moving really fast in a future version as opposed to sitting still, or at least cover it up so you can only see the moving part of the water, the wave.

Other than that, this was pretty rad.

FFXXXL - 3/5
Good imitation, but not much to it, and it seems like a relatively easy thing to choose to imitate.

Alexandria - 2/5
No comment, except the title screen automatically made me think I was playing a Nathan Karr game.

superawesomegameyayz - 1/5
This game frightened me.

Super Walrus House - 5/5
Too bad it wasn't longer, but a good imitation and interesting looking characters. At first though I thought Salom was Super Walrus Man, because I didn't notice the wing. Ha ha. Other than that, it's interesting that Surlaw chose to imitate this, but in any case it was coool. I liked Dr. Mu. :P

Surf's Up Yuk - 4/5
This game had a ton of effort put into it obviously, but like everyone else, this is a RMZ game with Surlaw characters. This game stands a better chance outside of the contest, especially if more replay value is added for the Deluxe version.

Also, I missed Surlaw's Yuk design.

FFXXXL - 1/5
A point for imitation

Alexandria - 2/5
Eh.

superawesomegameyayz - 1/5
Outside of the contest, I would rate this a bit higher because this game somehow managed to immerse me with its vast emptiness and nonsensical pathways to explore.

Super Walrus House - 5/5
Instant win simply because of Ed's face on Dinosaur Giant. Nobody else stands a chance.

Surf's Up Yuk 3/5 ~ Fun game, but that's not even what Yuk looks like.
Final Fantasi XXX Legaci 4/5 ~ Except for the short, cutscene pace, it's basically a sequel.
Alexandria 2/5 ~ Alright for a joke, and the battles are better than Zander's, but it totally loses the cinematic tl,dr feel.
superawesomegameyayz 1/5 ~ what the hell is this
Super Walrus House 5/5 ~ Basically what's already been said. I looked and saw that it was good.

It was my take on Walthros, and I took the liberty of designing Yuk Deluxe to fit my style. I didn't think anyone minded that Yuk looked different. I was never really sure what he was to begin with... other than he was a Yuk.

It's funny, because one of the jokes in SWH was that Zoidberg doesn't know what Yuk Deluxe is either, and calls him "what may be a sea snake." Yuks are yuks.

I think that's about all the votes we're going to get, unless someone like James pops in, or the Heroists decide to return and upset the voting. Results will be posted in Hamsterspeak.

THREAD OVER.

I know voting is long over-- and I haven't even played all of them yet, but I just want to say that I really enjoyed Surfs Up Yuk. I played it all in one sitting last sunday, and it was made out of smiles.
