Arg. My progress has been too slow. I still haven't quite finished Jormungandling's belly (although I am close). Jabbercat has written me some cool new music, so I really need to get far enough to use it.
I have been pretty busy with work and with personal stuff lately.
Also, I need an intervention for my Dwarf Fortress addiction. :P

So I have uploaded a new version here
Highlights, for anyone who hasn't bothered to look at the subversion log:
* Lots of new text box portraits
* A Save-spot in the Gallopeg Forest
* Mini-golf game is fully playable (with prizes!)
* Gisli the Viking now joins your party (or from his perspective, you join his party)
* Jormungandling's Belly dungeon is complete
* Teaser of the next area
I wish I had been as productive all through the Finish Your Dang Game contest as I was in the last five days. I guess being late for a deadline does something good for me somehow :)
If anybody wants to skip close to the new stuff, and they don't already have their own save-game, here is mine

Maybe a little one ^_^camdog wrote:I don't suppose there's an extra scene for the players that actually manage to defeat Jormungandling, is there?

It has been many years since I have played this, so I think I will be restarting from the beginning.
But rest assured, I will be playing this. This week. Maybe even tomorrow night.
I'm still looking forward to Havoc. Been waiting for him to join the party for a very long time. Any chance we'll see him in action before the year is over?

Holy crap, Wandering Hamster updated! Haven't had a full playthrough since the forest and Jormungandling battle were added in a while back, so I'll probably be starting from the very beginning again.
Actually downloaded it last night at 2 AM when I should've been sleeping, but unfortunately haven't had a chance to play it yet. That should change within the next 15 mintues or so (when I get back home from school!), though.

I am already thinking about the *next* update. No more multi-year update gaps!
The next update will complete the Kelp Reef area, but I also want to add some stuff to the beginning of the game too, so feedback and suggestions for anything in the earlier parts of the game are welcome.
Three big things I hope to add are:
* House of the Family The Hamster - Bob's mother's house, in which you can talk to her and to Bob's numerous siblings.
* Plip School - After you restore Hasim to his throne, retuning to the Plip Tamer should allow you to enroll in Plip School, which would be a more elaborate menu-driven extension of the training battles that you can already fight.
* East and West Broastia - Just as Flanat is associated with Flanat Castle, I want a village to be associated with Broaste Castle. It will be divided into two small halves. One of which will be depressed and sparsely populated, the other of which will be abandoned and run down. I would like to make James rebuild these later on in the game, but for now I just want them to exist.

Heh, just found out I'm terrible at mini-golf. Even after I figured out the controls, I could only improve my score of 65 to around 47, which was still "INSANELY bad."
I did manage to get a couple of hole-in-ones... but the hole-in-18s and hole-in-19s kinda counteracted that.
I'm guessing heavily stacked poison damage is the best way to go about actually beating Jormungandling? I managed to get it to the point where poison was doing nearly 100 damage every time, but I just didn't have enough healing items to keep it up long enough.

Hehe :)
It is actually possible to get all hole-in-ones without cheating. But the best I have done myself (without cheating) is eight holes in one plus one birdie.
The two holes with the rolling wheels are hardest for me. Getting the timing right on those can be excruciating.
I really need to fix the encounter rate system so that you can set any min/max number of steps, rather than being bound to the current values, which really move in much-too-large increments.

I could lower them a bit. Mostly though, I want to figure out how to make battles less boring.JSH357 wrote:My only request is lower encounter rates.

The battles are fine for a while, but Bob runs out of Level MP by the end of dungeons, leaving you with the option of fighting longer battles or running away, and it gets kind of old running. I guess if pressed I would say most of the enemies in the forest area have too much HP, too.

I got ridiculously lucky the first time on one of those--I just held down the spacebar until the power bar was HUGE and then let go, and managed to get a hole-in-one that way.The two holes with the rolling wheels are hardest for me. Getting the timing right on those can be excruciating.
It took four or five hits on my second playthrough of that round, though... didn't quite have the same luck with the timing that time.
I think the ones that gave me the most trouble were the really oddly-shaped ones where you have to bounce the ball off a bunch of walls to get it in the hole. My aim was never quite good enough for that, so I always ended up getting it stuck in corners. I also managed to hit the ball off of the course on one of them (I think it was 8 or 9? the one with some ducks wandering around the outside), but it didn't seem to cause any problems.

Life tablets should have some sort of item description. The lack of one is really jarring in some places. Also, many attacks lack sound effects, though the fact that there are SO MANY is wonderful.James Paige wrote:The next update will complete the Kelp Reef area, but I also want to add some stuff to the beginning of the game too, so feedback and suggestions for anything in the earlier parts of the game are welcome.
You should be able to bribe the guard in Hashim Castle's basement to get the OTHER treasures. Having to choose between the miss-able Heal spell and the Shileigleh (sp?) is absolutely unacceptable to us completionists.
The stickyglove/thiefglove weapon is peachy, but essentially means whoever uses it has no means of making a physical attack. If it did a *small* amount of damage, I would easily never use any other weapon in the game. I pray this weapon gets a wonderful upgrade way later.
There should be someone who asks for carrots in return for forging that carrot sword people keep thinking Bob owns. Maybe have the requirements be something like 99 carrots? Even under normal circumstances that would be daunting to aquire.
Vitamin C tablets. Think Chrono Trigger's Strength Capsules.
Bob Surlaw NEEDS to be swimming around in the background of the Kelp Reef. Just saying. Speaking of Surlaw's OTHER characters, it'd be a fantastic reference to have Horace hiding in some bushes somewhere observing Bob, but never actually interfering.
All of Gisli's lines are hilarious and well written.
SOMEBODY needs to get Dummefaust.
