Wanted: A Personal Project Manager

Post by Twinconclusive »

I started up the revision (redo? remake?) of Darkavern something like three weeks ago.
Like most new projects, I sprinted to get as much work done as possible and churned out a few nice graphics and some parts of a dungeon.
Also like most of my projects, this drive quickly died out and I haven't touched the thing in a week or two now.
I've found that I like making graphics and animations, but I dislike putting them into place, writing the scripts, and making maps.

Interestingly, I have found that when I team up with somebody else, my drive seems to die out at a severely slower pace.

Therefore, I would like somebody to stand in to throw deadlines and game goals at me.
I could probably write up a list of everything that I'd like to accomplish within the game for its next release and would ask for the Manager to chop my list up and assign deadlines to each part.
  • * The Manager would give me goals to accomplish on a regular (weekly?) basis until I am able to complete the goals of the project.

    * The Manager will receive weekly builds of Darkavern to confirm the game's progress.

    * Should I fail to complete one of the goals, I will be penalized a total of S$100 per failure each week until the issue has been resolved.

    * The manager should also be ready to present ideas or criticism towards the game.
Wanted: Personal Project Manager
Requirements: Capable of PM'ing a list of goals on a regular basis.
Preferable: Sufficient proof that applicant has been capable of managing own projects.
Salary: S$250 per week.

Help the slime of poor discipline who has lost both his will and his way!

This is a good idea.

I could use someone to bug me about Phantom Tactics. Perhaps we can enter into a profitable arrangement, given your involvement with that game.

I manage a bank for a living. I can't prove it, though. I would be willing to put my managerial skills to work for YOU if you still need it. I got a whip that is ready for crackin'.

If somebody did this for me, with all of my big projects, that would be awesome.

Great idea Twin. I'd also volunteer to help ya out. Managing stuff like this is easy, ha.

Hmm, so it'd be like me telling you to tell me to work on graphics. :D

It looks like other people could use this same service.
Perhaps we should just have a circle of Project Managers?

Oh god, I'd be all over this. I keep waiting until I get my new laptop to start working. I lost all my old stuff with the old one, and it's been a kick in the metaphorical pants, motivation-wise.

We should try setting up bugzilla accounts for ourselves, to keep track of these things.

Alternatively, feel free to utilize the site wiki for this sort of thing.

One of the reasons I've been keeping a design journal for two of my games is to make sure I allow some time each week to do something toward their production. In seven years I had managed about two weeks' worth of updates. Then I started the design journal and have kept up with design for almost a 100 weeks now.

So a design journal helps loads, too. It helps you keep track of what you've done and what you still want to do.

One game journal tracks on a weekly basis the things I've fixed, the things I've added, the things I still need, and the bugs I've encountered that are still unresolved at week's end.

The other game's journal is more general and is written in the style of me talking to you, including impressions of the work I've done in a given day. While the first journal is charted by the week, the second is charted by the day.

I find that the weekly journal is more effective because I feel bad whenever I miss a week, but not so much when I miss a day.

So, if you haven't started a journal for your game, I'd recommend it. If I were project managing someone, I'd require this (probably the weekly one since it's more forgiving in the long run). And if anyone out there decides to represent this pour soul who seems unmotivated to keep up with his games, I'd advise requiring a journal out of him, too.
