FFT Tournament 5 - Matchups and videos

Post by Mogri »

Here's how this is going to work. Everyone gets two "lives" -- lose both and you're out. Everyone has two battles in round one and one battle in each subsequent round. Keep going until we find a winner. For those of you who were around for tournament 3, this is the same format.

Here are our contestants:
(2) Mogri
(2) JSH
(2) Momoka
(2) Spoonweaver
(2) StoneMonkWisdom
(2) Emiya
(2) Uncommon

And here are our matchups for round 1, brought to you by random.org:
- StoneMonkWisdom vs. Emiya
- Emiya vs. Uncommon
- Uncommon vs. Spoonweaver
- Spoonweaver vs. Mogri
- Mogri vs. Momoka
- Momoka vs. JSH
- JSH vs. StoneMonkWisdom

Videos coming soon!

StoneMonkWisdom vs. Emiya

ITT: I probably slaughter the pronunciation of "Emiya," plus FFT misnames his Knight.

[s]The rest of the videos are coming as soon as I figure out which of Momoka's five team submissions is the real one. (Argh! I did about five full battles with incorrect team setups. This is mostly just my fault.)[/s] It turns out I had his team right after all. It's JSH's team I keep screwing up.

Current standings:

(2) Mogri
(2) JSH
(2) Momoka
(2) Emiya
(1) Uncommon
(1) StoneMonkWisdom
[s](0) Spoonweaver[/s]

Yeah, sorry. But it'd be the last one, the only team that was actually legal.

End round 1. I'm pretty tired; does it show?

If these say they're not processed yet, give them a bit.

Mogri vs. Momoka

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/gd1fnviDpEs&hl ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/gd1fnviDpEs&hl ... 2=0x4e9e00" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Momoka vs. JSH

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/H6oVdi7EhrY&hl ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/H6oVdi7EhrY&hl ... 2=0x4e9e00" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

JSH vs. StoneMonkWisdom

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/4Bg8OsoV6Es&hl ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/4Bg8OsoV6Es&hl ... 2=0x4e9e00" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

I think JSH got really unlucky in this one. This is not to say he should have won necessarily, but SMW chewed right through his team. Ouch. :(

Current standings:
(2) Mogri
(2) Emiya
(1) Uncommon
(1) StoneMonkWisdom
(1) JSH
[s](0) Momoka[/s]
[s](0) Spoonweaver[/s]

Someone gets a bye next round. The winningest players are top-seeded, so it's me or Emiya. Emiya, do you want it? Yours for the taking; otherwise, pick an opponent: Uncommon or JSH.

God damn it, I meant "Napoleon", not "Evan". Ah well.

But wow, Chris and Napoleon really blew it on that second match. What part of "Run like a rabbit" didn't they get?

Heck if I know! I'll try to make sure it's correct in the next round.

Awesome matches, the name's spelled with an accent on the E, but don't worry lol, it doesn't really matter that much.
Btw, I thought I specified my knight to only have "X-Potion, Remedy, Holy Water, Phoenix Down only", it seemed strange to me that she started to use potions.
So as I pray, Unlimi- BOOM!! HEAD SHOT!!

Oh dang! I must have missed that. I'll make sure it's corrected in round 2.

By the way, let me know what you decide about the bye (see the note in "Current standings"). If I don't hear from you about it, I'll give your team the bye.

Hmm, well, I guess I wouldn't really want a bye, I kinda like to see my team fighting. As for who I'd like as an opponent I'd go with JSH, someone I didn't go against yet.

Okay, then here's the round 2 matchups:

- Mogri (bye)
2A- Emiya vs. JSH
2B- Uncommon vs. StoneMonkWisdom

And round 3 depends on whether Emiya or JSH wins 2A. If JSH wins:

3A- Mogri vs. JSH
3B- Emiya vs 2B

If Emiya wins, however:

3A- Emiya (bye)
3B- Mogri vs. 2B

I'll probably do rounds 2 and 3 tomorrow.

(edit) I think several of the problems I've been having (wrong names and unspecified skills) have been due to units not being marked "Active" in FFTastic. Either that or it's a big coincidence: Kate and Stompa were both missing the Active check; both had incorrect names and Kate used the wrong skills. This is a good thing to check if you ever run into the same problem.

I was working with FFTastic recently and sometimes ended up forgetting to send the unit with the lower left box marked 'swap with...' I personally recommend double checking to make sure you did this too, saving a backup file, and double checking everything after finishing and swapping each character while saving.

Also, I like the idea of each round in the tournaments having a different battlefield, something nice and open. Example as follows:
Round 1, all battles at location, "Lenalia Plateau"
Round 2, all battles at location, "Bervenia Volcano"
Round 3, all battles at location, "Araguay Woods"
Et cetera. That's probably something I'll do, or use the random.org to help pick places, and settings.

StoneMonkWisdom has pointed out that the stats for his Geomancer are wrong (he has Lv1 Squire stats :(), so I'll be rerunning his battle vs. Emiya.

For some of the tournaments, we've done completely random locations. However, this often ends up favoring some teams over others. Case in point was tournament 2, where my first matchup was "Church outside the town" (the final Zalmo battle) and I started on the roof. I won that handily with my Dancer/Calc/Mime team, then the next one was I think the room where Elmdor chats with Vormav -- about 10x10 tiles. They got slaughtered.

Varying it by round would be fine, but it's something that should be announced in advance unless you don't mind the luck factor. Since I originally announced Lenalia for the entire tournament, that's what I'll be going with.
