Tales II

Post by msw188 »

With the fix of the levelMP bug, I've finally been able to put together a workable demo of my new game, Tales of the New World II. Check it out on the gamelist here:
http://www.slimesalad.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=196

The main focus for this demo was the incorporation of individual item menues for each hero. But I tried to spend a fair bit of time on the gameplay as well. A review would be stupendous, but any comments in general are welcome here in this thread.

I enjoyed this much more than TNW1.

The amount of plotscripting that went into this is extremely admirable. I really like Apono. In fact, I think it's one of the few times I didn't groan whenever the OHR went into a battle.

I didn't particularly like the storytelling, though since this is DWish game, I guess it fits. I'm not particularly a fan of DW, so I can't really judge. But I did find the world to be really interesting, I just didn't like that the NPCs kind of just vomit a lot of information about it on you at once, and that's the main way you learn about it.

Really nice use of the new menus. The custom shops were great.

I will say as far as I played (Which I'm not sure if I'm at the end of the gameplay. I can't find the switch in the cave dungeon.) the battles were generally pretty easy, which I wouldn't have expected considering that I usually get creamed with DWish games the minute I step out on the world map for the first time.

I'm going to keep my eye on this one.

Thank you for your comments. Perhaps it is not clear that you need to press the Space Bar (or Ctrl) to 'search' for the switch in the proper spot. If you still cannot find it there may be some kind of super-bug going on (I've been able to activate it on all of my tries), so please let me know. Thanks again!

Hey man, I haven't even left the first continent yet, but I wanted to suggest maybe mess around with the menu positions to make it look more elaborate or cool to give your game a better feel. Like have your main menu at the left, and as you open more menus, they move to the right or something, and overlap a little. I think that would look pretty sweet. :hurr: I'll let you know more as I get further on in the game.

By the way, after I played your game and quit it, and loaded my Terrible Game Review, THIS happened:
<img src="http://www.kittyandchicken.com/Images/T ... eview0.bmp">
<img src="http://www.kittyandchicken.com/Images/T ... eview1.bmp">
This was when I didn't quit Game.exe before loading up my game. O_O How did you get your graphics into my game like that man? You must be some crazy hacker. :P It disappeared though when I restarted Game.

Hey thanks for the suggestion. I'll probably try experimenting with the layout more for the next update. Too bad that my graphics have already invaded your measly kingdom, so you might not even be around by that time!

To help any developers reading, some of those walkabouts, and the hero graphic in battle, are mine. Everything else looks like his. The hero graphic is number 1, as are the walkabouts I think (although it's a bit tough to tell from the picture).

I found it. I was playing this at two in the morning and wasn't particularly mentally fresh, so my brain was stuck on trying to activate the wall directly to the right of the stairs.

Ack! that definitely sounds like a bug!

What version of game.exe are you running?

data-mixing was a common result of running two copies of game.exe at the same time in versions older than ubersetzung, but if you are using ubersetzung, a wip, or a voxhumana RC, then the problem you saw definitely sounds like an unreported bug.

If he is playing it on the included game.exe (which I'm pretty sure is necessary), then that is the first WIP after the bugfix for the levelMP bug that I whined about before finally putting together a satisfactory test case a little bit ago.

This was the 1/10/08 WIP (the default one). I was only running one copy of game though.

Yes, only my game is truly evil enough to worm its way into other people's games.

I have just reuploaded my game using James' latest Vox candidate that fixes the running away aspect of the game. I also did a little bit of stat tweaking per Calehay's comments.

As always, the more comments/complaints/suggestions, the better! And thanks to everyone who tried out the game.

See http://gilgamesh.hamsterrepublic.com/cg ... cgi?id=575 for the NPC graphics cross-pollination bug. I'll have it licked in time for voxhumana.

Hey man, what's in your save script? Whatever it is everytime I choose that option in your game, my computer starts getting worked up and the laptop fan goes on. This continues on until I quit the game, and then if I choose to save again, your script gets my computer going again. No OHR game has ever done this to my computer before, so I'd like to know what sort of evil flows through your creation! :o

Whoa, really? So do you mean that any time you activate the Smiley and then pick Save, your computer gets put to work? And doesn't stop until you quit? That's pretty weird. You can see the script in question if you open up the backup file and look at TNW2GenScripts.txt. The first two scripts there should be the only things activated, and all they do is store some variables for the Windball and dying, besides showing a couple textboxes. Not sure what could be going on. Maybe it is not a good idea to use this line:

Code: Select all

if&#40;savemenu<>false&#41;,then
to allow the player to save...?

Not really sure about that, but yeah, when I activate the smiley to save, there is a considerable pause, and then the save menu pops up and my computer starts working hard.

Does it happen every time? Has it always happened, since starting the game? Does it happen if you try to revive someone instead?

Has anyone else noticed this, either in my game or any others (doing something specific consistently puts your computer to work)? I can't help but find it kind of funny that the majority of the comments here on my game are about weird computer voodoo.
