OHR on the Wii?

Post by RMZ »

Hey, I don't know a whole lot about this...

But I read in a magazine that they're designing stuff for the Wii where non-game companies can put out their own games for the wii. Not neccessarily Wii games, but games playable on the wii. Does anyone think our OHR games could possibly go to the Wii somehow?

If you have the freedom to release a game on the Wii via Virtual Console, odds are you have some sort of devkit which is more suited to the Wii. It might be possible (in time), but not worth it, and probably not reasonably doable by an amateur game developer.

It would perhaps be more doable on the 360 or (maybe) the PSP, due to the fact that certain emulators CAN be run on either console. Mapping out the buttons however would be a daunting task, given that even joystick support in the OHR is still about as limited as you can get.
To friends long gone, and those I've yet to meet - thank you.

If you recoded the engine and spent tens of thousands of dollars on Nintendo developer's kits then yes, it would be possible.

Porting the OHR to any other platform would be rough work, but S'orlock Reaves is already doing it for <a href="http://fmf.ohrdev.com/">Java mobile phones</a>, so I see no reason a wii version would be flatly impossible, it would just probably be a lot more work than it was worth.

I asked Thorbrian about Wii development. He says that the dev kit is called "WiiWare" and you have to pay $2500 for it. Games you make in it are available from Nintendo's download service. You earn 30% royalties on the sale of your games, although you have to sell a minimum of 5000 to earn anything.

If I had access to a WiiWare dev kit, I would be more interested in writing games that took advantage of the cool control-scheme, than in porting the OHR.

I would suggest just using the Java version, but the Wii Broswer doesn't support Java at all, throwing that idea out the window completely.

I do see porting over to something like the PSP much more feasible, though, due to existing development tools and it's easy to transfer over data through the USB cable. People would be required to have custom firmware, though, which is a huge downside (I couldn't get DOOM to work on my PSP because of me having standard firmware).

ever if this is too much work, it would be infidently amazing to have the ohr on a game platform, or ever a phone. i would'nt be disapointed if voxhumanna had to wait awile if this were to happen, and if money is an issue im sure all of us are willing to put in a few bucks for it.
Blip.

...

If you have the technical skill required to make a game on ANY system, the OHR is probably redundant. Sorry, but this sounds like a dumb idea to me any way that you slice it. Even if it was done 'just for fun' you'd have to spend thousands of dollars on the devkit (I assume). People use the OHR because it's free. If they want to pay to develop a game, they're going to use more advanced software.

And good luck selling an OHR game on the VC. Beyond the community, there wouldn't be much interest, I imagine.
