This is reminding me a whole lot of those single-level Super Mario World ROMhack contests they sometimes host on smwcentral. A contest is generated, usually involving a theme (such as "Make a 'ninth door' for Bowser's Castle", or "Work only with vanilla resources", or just "make a good level"), and people take that idea and create single level hacks to submit. They are then judged according to things like quality, fun level, originality, and adherence to the contest theme. Aside from the last one, I have no idea if those are the actual categories of judging.
You know, just from the romhack contests I mentioned up there, we could theoretically do the same thing with OHR dungeons. We'd have to stick to just one, especially since we're dealing with a very small number of game makers here, but I think they could be really fun. So here's my plagiaristastic list of OHR dungeon contest ideas:
1)
Create a 6th Batman Villain Dungeon for RMZ's Batman & Robin
Designers would pick a Batman villain that wasn't already in the game and make a dungeon based on him or her. We could use a blend of resources already in the game while adding some new things where appropriate. For the best results, it would have to sync well with the rest of the game, using similar (yet new and refreshing) approaches to cutscenes, puzzles, and battle setups. And don't you dare think RMZ already used all the Batman villains because there's a TON of them, mostly obscure one-shot villains. Batman newbies would have to do a little research, which I would encourage regardless. I know if I were entering this kind of contest, I'd make a level centered around Simon the Pieman.
(P.S. - don't actually do this unless RMZ gives us permission to work with his game's resources)
2)
Make a Dungeon Using Only Vikings of Midgard Resources
This is the simplest one, and it plays off of the very reason Vikings of Midgard was
created - to give new OHR users some tools to experiment with. No one has been doing this, and it's frustrating to me, so let's break the ice by having new and experienced developers both making dungeons using only what they can find in vikings.rpg. The character classes were deliberately (at first, at least) made to be generic and applicable to just about anything, it should not be hard for a writer to come up with a simple story playing off of their personalities. And besides, it's not the story we'll be focusing on, but the design of the dungeon, and what better way to get started on it than with entirely pre-made resources? "Oh, but that won't let me be creative!" you say. That's idiotic. People can be breathtakingly creative when they have only a limited pool of resources available, and the SMWcentral Vanilla contests (or romhacks in general) are definitive proof of that.
3)
Just Make a Good Dungeon
Similar to the Heart of the OHR contest (create a good RPG), opposite of the Terrible Games contest (make something laughably terrible), just do your best with what you can come up with to make the best dungeon you can. Make it fun, make it creative, make it a memorable experience, make it challenging. Give it
all the attributes so that we can look forward to the dungeons you'll design in your other games!
