Block Quest

Post by Newbie Newtype »

www.blockquest.net

I just discovered this game today, and it is quite a lot of fun. You are a simple Megaman-esque sprite character with the ability to dash and wall jump, and you play through levels that people have designed.

So far I haven't tried nearly impossible levels yet. Since levels are a square and don't scroll, some of the levels I've tried have had to use a bit of creativity to provide challenge and length.

There are probably a lot of crappy levels out there, but this game is pretty good for what it's worth.

Wall jumping is too unresponsive.

The best thing I have done to make it work most of the time is that your character needs to start sliding downwards for it to work, meaning it's difficult to perform on 1x1 blocks.

This is quite fun!
Yeah, I hate how the game will sometimes lag for half of a tick. Really messes up the long levels. And jumping in general is too hard. But it's still quite fun!

I've gotten used to how wall jumping works to the point where I sometimes do it by accident (you just hold a direction against the wall, then press the opposite direction while still holding the first key). Levels or positioning can still be a problem though.

I'll hand you jumping. Precision is a mess when it comes to jumping.

Still though... The game's fun factor outweighs some of its cons for me as long as I'm playing on a well made level (avoid levels that are pretty, heh. Go for levels that look like levels or are ugly).

EDIT: NOt all ugly levels are good... I keep finding ones where people scatter random crap around but the way to beat the level is incredibly easy.

Here's one that's both pretty and fun. And mildly challenging:

Yeah. That's the kind of level that "looks like a level" and thus, wants to be played.

Here's a level I made: http://www.blockquest.net/level/31330/

Judging by the ratio of plays to completion (I played this level myself), the level is frighteningly hard.

I like it. Hard, but not impossible. Difficult upside down parts, but not undo-able. And I can see some areas to lower my time, should I so desire. Excellent level!

Thanks. You're probably the first person to beat it completely legit (some other guy that played it managed to find an exploit that gave him around 150 ticks of completion time, which I had to make a lot of spikes to fix.)

Eeh..... technically, I skipped the bottom-left section, and just long-jumped over the spikes. Not entirely honest, but oh well. :)

Dynamo apparently did that too.

I'm not sure if I can fix it without changing most of that part of the level, though.

EDIT: I did change it. I wonder if that helped.

Much better! Now I can't even beat it. :P Let me practice more...

My own skill at level creation is only so-so, but here we go:

Good level. A bit tricky to figure out what to do, then after that it's a matter of wall jump timing.

Might want to clean it up so people won't think it's crappy looking, though.
