The Orb of Zot awaits. Let's Play Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup!

Post by Mogri »

Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is an offshoot of Linley's Dungeon Crawl by Linley Henzell. The game has a strong anti-scumming design philosophy: anything that's boring and repetitive but improves your odds of winning has been mercilessly excised from the game. Guys, this game is great.

Image

Actually, though, I'm not too well-versed in the ways of Stone Soup. I've spent much more time with the original Crawl, which has a delicious DS port. The games are similar enough that this doesn't matter too terribly much, but naturally Stone Soup has a lot of features that Crawl lacks, notably, a few new gods and species. And speaking of species...

Image

Crawl has a lot of them. Actually, the only new ones on that list are Deep Dwarf, Vampire, and Felid; Crawl had Ogre and Ogre-Mage as separate species, but you can see they've been rolled together for Stone Soup. (Probably a good thing -- are they really different species?)

Here's the quick rundown.

Humans are humans. Nothing special, no skill affinities, no experience modifier.

High elves and deep elves are elfy elves. Deep elves are weaker but more magic-affine.

Sludge elves are drow wannabes. They're good with unarmed combat, but not tough enough to make it a very good idea.

Mountain dwarves used to be split into mountain and hill. Since I can't tell you the difference between the two, combining them was another good move. These are dorfs to the core. Give them an axe and some heavy armor and they'll be happy.

Deep dwarves are a novelty class that doesn't regenerate. They do start with a wand of healing and the ability to recharge wands at the expense of a permanent point of MP.

Hill orcs are orcs, which play a lot like their mortal enemies, the dwarves. Of special note is orcs' patron deity, whom no one else can worship.

Merfolk are nonetheless very land-capable. They only go into fin mode when they're in water. Proficient with tridents and ice magic.

Halflings are the tiny fellers we all know and love. They're hard to keep alive.

Kobolds are a lot like halflings, but with somewhat better skill proficiencies. They are carnivores and less picky about what they eat than any other race.

Spriggans are tiny, speedy little things. They are quite a bit faster than the second-fastest race. They make good assassins.

Nagas are snake-people, naturally. They don't make a lot of noise as they slither, but they don't move as fast as other races, either.

Centaurs, on the other hand, are quick on their feet. They're great with bows and less great with things that aren't bows.

Ogres are big louts with the power to hit things really hard.

Trolls are a lot like ogres, except they regenerate quickly, starve quickly, and are dumb as rocks. Trolls are just as happy to claw things apart as to bash them with weapons too big for most races to wield.

Minotaurs' unusual anatomy precludes the use of most armor, but they're fairly intelligent for a large species and get extra attacks from their horns, even when they're using a weapon.

Kenku are bird-people. If you get one to survive long enough, they can flyyyyyyy. Note: Birds are not known for their exceptional hardiness.

Draconians start out only dragonlike in appearance, but as they level up, they take on a color and get abilities based on their color. You can't control what they grow into, so this is a crapshoot.

Demigods are an indistinct race of something combined with a god (in the great mythological tradition). They have great stats, but they level up extremely slowly and they can't worship a god, which sucks.

Demonspawn are regular humanoids with mostly bad skill modifiers, but once they level up a few times, they start to mutate and gain cool powers. Like draconians, the mutations are random and uncontrollable. The "good" gods won't accept demonspawn followers.

Mummies are exactly what they sound like. Being undead abominations, they neither eat nor drink -- which means they can't starve, but they can't use helpful potions. A gimmicky race that takes some optimization/trickery to perform well. Mummies are also excluded from certain racist gods.

Ghouls are shambling corpses who are in a perpetual state of rot. Little pieces of their bodies start to fall off unless they feed constantly. Ghouls are dumb, but make decent fighters. Those racist gods won't take ghouls, either.

Vampires exist in limbo between life and unlife. Feeding on blood makes them feel more human, while dieting makes them feel more dead. If they go without blood long enough, they'll stop regenerating; some players like to keep their vampires just above this line to keep those handy undead immunities. Racist gods etc.

Felids are cats. Not catmen, not catgirls, just cats. This places some severe restrictions on what they can use. No weapons and I think they can't use wands either. In exchange, they have nine lives, earned as you level up.

Image

Crawl doesn't have "character classes" as such -- what you see above are referred to as "backgrounds." This is apt, since anyone can eventually develop any skill. Your background determines starting equipment and skills.

Warrior backgrounds are all about dealing physical damage, with or without weapons. Fighters are better-armored than gladiators, but gladiators have some throwing weapons.

Zealots start the game already worshipping a god. The healer god is one of those racist gods, so not all races qualify. The chaos knight background is in grey because it is not a recommended background (even for humans, who have all recommendable classes recommended).

Warrior-mages are watered-down warriors and watered-down mages, specializing in schools of magic that don't deal direct damage. They're generally pretty nice if you can get them to survive a couple of levels. Skald used to be called Crusader until just recently. I'm not sure why it changed.

Mages are exactly what they sound like. The wizard background is for people who can't pick a school. The conjurer background is for people who can't pick a school but know they want to blow things up.

Adventurers are do-it-all types; in other words, they do everything poorly. Artificers are new and I think they're Use Magic Device-types or something.

OKAY. Intro over. Who's our first victim gonna be?

*Shifty eyes*

Sounds...interesting. Interesting, as in, i've never used that 'Whos Playing' thing at the bottom of the forums.

I might be interested...what must I do to get involved...
And, are you playing this? If so, what are you playing as?

Finally, what is the game like? FF Style? Text Parser? RUNESCAPE?!!?1

This is a Let's Play. Surely you've heard of them.

Crawl is a roguelike. You can play along at home. For the purposes of this thread, though, participants just steer the direction of the game - in this case, by choosing a character.

This game is unbelievably good. Version .9 just came out too. If you ever thought you might want to play a Rouge-like, this is a great one to start on. It's highly tactical, highly flexible very user friendly.

Kobold Berserker is a viable start. Whomever should play that.

I'm having a really good time with this game. Much better than the last roguelike we LP'd! I just had (reasonably) good luck with a Spriggan Berserker.

Things were going so well with my Kenku character...then, a Phantom came along and ruined it! Stupid non-physical ectoplasmic creature...

My best combo is Spriggan Earth Elementalist, I got to the 6th floor with that.

My worst character was a Halfling Ranger, I switched from my ranged weapon to the first dagger I picked up to get up close to a bat, and it was cursed. needless to say the ironic part in this tale is the way this very Ranger was the cause of death of the Spriggan.

I love the feeling of being trolled by my previous character's ghost.

@Neo: I know. Why the heck am I haunting myself...?!

My favorite god is the nature god (I forget her name). I got favor with her long enough to be able to turn Fungi into Fungi Allies! That's useful, considering I can turn dead corpses into Fungi...

My favorite characters are Draconians.

Berserkers are good beginner characters. The troll berserker is a good combination for toughness and stopping power. The kobold berserker is good for finesse and survivability.

Playing a berserker, it is easy to get past the beginning game once you lean the basics.

while the game doesn't recommend this, I discovered (through picking the random option) that Trolls make fairly good Warpers.

My favourate god in the game is the gambling god. I love to get rid of cursed equipment and rotten meat and gaining favour for it! And I like the cards, even the summoning ones, Boring Beetle got one of my dudes after a fluke in summoning it.

@The MasK
I wish that the game would reset the name after each play, I forget sometimes. Because it never resets automatically (unless there's an option that I'm missing.)

Also, does anyone here know about/has played Elona? I think the dev stopped working on it but it's a blast! It's a mash-up of Rogue-likes and Simulation games. It doesn't have perma-death either, so if you like a character you can keep 'em.

Here's it's Wikia

There are plenty of gods in the game...although, I wouldn't advise being a follower of Xom. That god worries me...he considers you a plaything. He sounds more like a child than a god...

Graaaaaaaaaah! Those stupid snakes are tough ol' *Insert nasty word*!
They keep killing me on the first floors...I can't survive long enough to get my disired god...

EDIT: I take back what I said about Xom. Even though it isn't recommended, Chaos Knight is pretty good. If you gain enough favor with Xom (Which is completly random!) he'll grant you gifts. In one round, he granted me a scroll, interesting wands (One was a Wand of Hastings, the other was one that was Wieldable, and came with its own mana reserve and spells) and even an ally.
It started out as a humanoid blob monster, but it transformed into an Efreet, which was pretty cool. It leaves a trail of fire.

Gon 1

Post by Mogri »

<img src="http://www.slimesalad.com/files/LP/crawl-title2.PNG">

Welcome back to Let's Play Crawl. Today, we meet our first sacrifice: Gon, the Kobold Berserker.

<img src="http://www.slimesalad.com/files/LP/crawl-gon-1.PNG">

Let's take a look at the screen here.

In the upper left area, we see Gon and a few surrounding tiles. Gon can't see much because he's in a corner.

Below that is the message buffer. Crawl welcomes Gon and Trog, his patron deity, commands him to kill stuff. Spoilers: Gon will kill stuff.

On the upper right, our vital stats. Gon has a decent amount of health but no mana. Trog hates spells and spellcasting, so we probably won't see that mana bar go up very much. Defense is separated into three stats: AC, EV, and SH, representing armor, evasion, and shield, respectively. Finally, each character has three core stats: Str, Int, and Dex. They do pretty much what you expect.

Below that, the monsters pane. It's currently empty.

Below that, the commands pane. If you use mouse controls, I imagine you'll be clicking here a lot.

Below that, our hero's inventory. He's got some meat, an animal skin, and a blunt object.

Below that and barely visible, the items on the ground where Gon is standing. There are no items on the ground where Gon is standing.

Time to explore! Crawl has a handy autoexplore feature. I push 'o' a few times and Gon finds a marble ring. Who knows what it is? Gon slips it on and figures it out: a +5 ring of protection. This boosts his AC by 5 -- a very nice find. A little more sploring yields a helmet and a buckler.

Rounding a few more corners, Gon finds his first enemy: a bat. Bats are really fast, getting about three turns for each of Gon's, but they're not exactly dangerous. A good tactic for hitting them is to step away when they're not adjacent.

Gon finds another bat soon after. This one leaves a corpse. Being a kobold, Gon doesn't mind eating raw meat, but he's not hungry, so he 'p'rays to Trog and Trog accepts the corpse as a sacrifice.

<img src="http://www.slimesalad.com/files/LP/crawl-gon-2.PNG">

Gon then runs into a kobold. His cousin is out for blood, but garden-variety kobolds aren't a threat to trained adventurers. Behind the kobold is a leather armor, which is just a little better than the animal skin Gon was wearing. On it goes.

A few monsters later:

<img src="http://www.slimesalad.com/files/LP/crawl-gon-3.PNG">

Items with descriptors are always special in some way. It's not always a good way, but it usually is. Common descriptors like "runed" or "glowing" usually indicate a weapon with some pluses, while exotic adjectives usually mean you've found an artifact. This hand axe is comparable to the mace Gon's using, but a few pluses could make it worth the switch. Gon equips it and doesn't notice anything special, so it's not venomous or flaming or anything like that.

A little later, Gon finds some runed throwing darts. While Gon will do most of his killing with his muscles, it's nice to have some ranged options to soften up bad guys before they can close.

Gon is done exploring level 1 now. Ideally, he'd have gained a level here, but Gon is a tough enough guy to take on harder stuff, plus Trog's got his back.

And sure enough, the first monster Gon finds on level 2 brings him to level 2. (Hereafter, I'll refer to dungeon levels as DL and experience levels as XL.)

<img src="http://www.slimesalad.com/files/LP/crawl-gon-4.PNG">

Kobolds like throwing darts -- here we see the result of the fight with Gon's second cousin. Gon strolled up to the kobold and beat him down. He ain't afraid of no darts.

A little more exploration reveals two new monsters: a giant cockroach and a hobgoblin. Giant cockroaches are tough to kill, but they're not really a threat. Hobgoblins are somewhat more respectable than kobolds, even if they don't throw darts. Gon sacrifices some corpses, then decides to munch on one of his kills. Any other race wouldn't be able to stomach raw flesh unless they were really hungry.

Next, an easily dispatched snake and rat, followed by a worm who gets in a lucky crit:

<img src="http://www.slimesalad.com/files/LP/crawl-gon-5.PNG">

Gon stood his ground and the worm turned tail. Gon can't outrun the worm, so he finishes it off with a few darts. This brings him to XL 3. He also develops Axes skill as a result of swinging his weapon around long enough. Remember I mentioned that anyone can learn anything? This is how it's done.

Every three levels brings an opportunity to raise a stat of your choice. Eventually, we'll want to make sure Gon isn't brick-dumb, but for now, a strength bonus hits the spot.

Gon is a little injured, so we rest. Hitting Shift+NumPad 5 skips up to 100 turns. Gon could also drink one of the potions we've picked up, but there's no need to do that. Those potions will be handy later.

Gon also finds a glowing quarterstaff. He equips it experimentally, but doesn't notice any special properties. He gets penalized for using the quarterstaff with a shield and staves aren't really his thing anyway. He discards it.

Oh, hey --

<img src="http://www.slimesalad.com/files/LP/crawl-gon-6.PNG">

We just earned another god power. Gon could already go berserk; now he can -- well, take a look. Berserking is generally more useful, but this is handy to have in Gon's utility belt.

A few fights later, Gon acquires Shields skill. Offensively-minded berserkers aren't initially skilled with them, but the buckler Gon's using doesn't inhibit his fighting, so there's no reason not to.

Gon has finished exploring DL2. He descends to the third floor and finds...

<img src="http://www.slimesalad.com/files/LP/crawl-gon-7.PNG">

Our first unique! Uniques are varying degrees of serious business. Let's break out Trog's Berserk ability to deal with this guy. Gon's vision is clouded by a red film and he feels his urge to kill rising. Rawr!

<img src="http://www.slimesalad.com/files/LP/crawl-gon-8.PNG">

So he does.

<img src="http://www.slimesalad.com/files/LP/crawl-gon-9.PNG">

Here's the aftermath of the battle: Gon has some serious munchies and is slowed and exhausted. Berserking will do that to a guy. "Exhausted" is fancy code for "you can't berserk again right now," but Slow is a serious penalty to get during a battle. Trog reminds you to berserk responsibly.

Next time: More Gon! More killing! More action.
