There are actually two Epic Marathons running at the moment. One ends this month. The other ends next month. And both are compatible with other contests, so I wouldn't worry about interference.

And as far as I know no one's actually doing the second contest (at least, no one's spoken up about it yet). So this is probably the best time to launch it, honestly.

I propose rules like this:

(NES version: -All sprites and tiles are limited to 3 colors)
-Sprites are limited to 3 colors only.
-Tiles are limited to 4 colors - but one has to be consistent through all the others. Usually, it's black. (see the next rule for info)

(NES version: -Only 13 colours are able to be shown at a time (not including sprites) <-- pretty sure this is inaccurate; I think the PPU is set so that 12 colors are shared by all backgrounds + 1 transparent(total of 13 ... this is usually just black). For sprites, it's the same thing, only the transparent color is ... transparent. In general, they can't total up to 24 colors )
-Tilesets are limited to 13 colors.
-NPCs are limited to 3 colors.
-All NPCs on screen + the hero's colors must not be more than 12(transparency would be the 13th)

(NES version: -Only 8 sprites per scanline (basically, 8 sprites per X axis))
-This is sort of impossible to duplicate without some sort of plotscript to blink them out... Worth dropping IMO.

(NES version: -Max of 12 sprites on the screen)
-Simple enough to simulate ... Hero + screen NPCs must not exceed 12 at any time.

(NES version: -This was their palette)
-Easy enough to upload, though no NES palette is truly accurate (Don't bother asking why). A required palette specified by DB is fine with me.

This is probably a bit complicated ... but I don't think it would be that hard to stick to. The main complication is limiting to 12 colors for NPCs and Heros.

OK, so Wiz and I totally want to enter again this year but we both have important stuff scattered throughout the summer months, so is it possible for us to get (tentative, even) contest dates pretty soon?

I suggest that we all just start now. I don't see the big deal about a day here or there as far as start times go. Not everyone is going to start at the same time even if there's an "official start date".

Of course, with that said, I'm still not starting till I get the go ahead. So....... what are those dates?

In addition to the date, it looks like we're also waiting for 'sub to release the contest's theme.

MR.J, 16 colors and 3 colors(or 4 without transparency) per sprite is good enough for rules to make it 8-bit enough. let's not strangle people.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to this! I hope you hold it soon. I think most the college guys finish their finals this week, so starting it around next week or friday would probably be a good idea.

Hey guys,

I haven't had the chance to iron out the rules yet, but I plan on doing that first thing tomorrow morning. Maybe we could start it then? Would that work for most? We're talking about having the rules up and starting around 11ish EST tomorrow. If not, I'd be happy to do it some other time. It looks like I won't be able to enter anyways, so any time the majority of you guys want to is fine with me.
