Best Game Ever?
What's your favorite game and why do you consider it the best of all you've played? Any type, not just RPGs.
The object of this thread is to introduce others to games they might not have played otherwise, and perhaps to discuss what makes the 'perfect' game.
Nothing special, just felt like starting some sort of conversation.

Earthbound, for many reasons. To me it's one of the few relatively early commercial games that really makes a case for games being about something more than "having fun." It's inspiring, interpretive and has its own unique aesthetic feel. Not to mention, it's just a blast to play.
Non-RPGs? Super Smash Bros Brawl comes close in spite of its shortcomings (many of which can be turned off) and Super Metroid is a definite contender.

Super Metroid!
It never, ever gets old, even once you have the game memorized inside and out. There's just too many different ways you can play the game.
If you delve into RPGs, my favorite is Lufia II because of the mix of Zelda-style dungeons with a traditional RPG, but Valkyrie Profile 2 comes in at a very close second because of the amazing battle system.

I hate to rate things in terms of "best ever" since what I like best depends a lot on my current mood. But I would rank Monkey Island 3 pretty darn high on the list. We Love Katamari is way up there too, as is Shadow Of the Colossus.
I am also a big fan of Awale. When I am away from computers and portable electronic devices, it is nice to know a game that I can play with nothing more than 48 small rocks and a level patch of dirt.

Haven't tested it, but I'm pretty sure it needs an amiga emulator. I think I'm using WINUAE.

The game I've probably played through and enjoyed the most was Dragon Warrior IV. If V and VI had been officialy translated and available on SNES, they might mave been viable contenders. The game I've probably gotten the most sheer enjoyment out of would probably be Super Smash Bros Melee, due entirely to multi-player in college.
Trying to be objective, I look at some classic games and see greatness. It is hard to find much fault with Super Mario Bros 3. I wish I could put a Zelda here, but something holds me back. The immersion is just not quite there on the level of the classic RPGs, at least for me. If I had to pick a favorite, I'd probably pick either the original or Majora's Mask, which is probably a good indicator of how I feel about the series as a whole - the gameplay is usually pretty good, but the main arc of every game tends to get a little stale. Exploration is what saves them.
I never got into Earthbound. I think I found it too late - I didn't play it for the first time until well beyond the days of the Gamecube, and I can't even pretend that I was prepared to give it my full attention. I tried Lufia II, but it didn't pull me in.
Super Metroid is great, but in my opinion overrated a little. The atmosphere does not pull me in, and so for me it does get old - figuring out the breaking of the tube was cool the first time, as was finding secret passages in various places, but afterwards its just another shooting game to me. Zelda II was also a very good game, but the side-scrolling battles and momentum-driven (realistic) jumping is just not that fun for me.
I have not played any of the other games mentioned.

Yes, it supports the data files from the Amiga version.
My Mom uses ScummVM to play Money Island 1 and 2 natively on her Linux box :) (Monkey Island 2 is her favorite game. I couldn't convince her that 3 was better)

When I was younger, I played the piss out of FFIV and River City Ransom. I was only five or six years old, and even though I couldn't understand most of the dialogue, I still made it a point to rent FFIV every week from the store. I eventually bought it and haven't played it for years.
River City Ransom has seen a lot of playtime as well.

Geez, probably Terranigma and/or Illusion Of Gaia and Shadow Of The Colossus. The Quintet games because they're basically exactly what I want out of an RPG: an action-based battle system that isn't boring, mostly. The only game since to play quite like that I've played is Symphony of the Night, but I'm probably a little behind. Though I also liked how Terranigma got less linear and almost sandboxy toward the end when you started raising the civilization level of each town. And the ending! Jesus!
Shadow Of The Colossus is great because it makes you feel like the coolest damn guy ever each time you take one of the colossi down.
I've also been pretty found of Hotel Dusk: Room 215 lately. Just something about a detective story where the protagonist has to inadvertently solve the personal problems of everyone he meets just to get the information he needs amuses me. For a story to be as hardboiled as it is and so heartwarming at the same time boggles my mind.
