Biggest 'textbook' scam ever (image heavy)

Post by Only One In All »

Hey guys!

Do you want to go to college?

Do you want to go to get a degree to specialize in a certain area of knowledge to make a living?

Do you want to get through your general education courses without being scammed and ripped off by your university if you want to graduate?

TOO BAD.

In order to graduate from California State University Northridge, you must fulfill certain general education requirements. You must also take two science classes and a LAB that accompanies that class as part of this requirement.

Biology 100 is one of the classes offered, along with the 100L which, is the lab class. They are two separate classes taught by two separate professors.

Fortunately, the BIO 100 professor I have does not require you to buy a textbook, thus saving you some funds to buy a couple of meals to get you by for a couple of weeks.

But THANK THE HEAVENS for, in order to take the LAB portion of the required course, ALL lab classes require you to purchase this SPECIAL CSUN EDITION PACKAGE:

<img src="http://www.kittyandchicken.com/Images/r ... e_full.jpg">

That's right! Without this package, you cannot pass the class, thus rendering you unable to graduate from the university and get your bachelor's degree!

Now you might be saying, HEY well guess what! I'm not going to buy this stupid thing from campus, I'll just get it online! WRONG. Notice it's a CSUN EDITION? Look at the receipt:

<img src="http://www.kittyandchicken.com/Images/r ... eceipt.jpg">

Well so WHAT? You say! I'll just not get this dumb thing and take the class without it! Unfortunately SLIMEY, your MONEY SAVING TACTICS won't work here! Refer back to the first picture. See that blue piece of slime which tells you what comes in that skinny little piece of colored paper? Look at the last bullet point - THAT'S RIGHT. This is required, for you not only have a portion of the class on campus itself, but also an ONLINE portion. If you don't take that part, you can't get anything higher than a D- in the class!

Well why not just access the site without buying this thing?

Because they put in an ACCESS CODE. No other classes that have an online portion thus far have had it but for THIS class, you need to get the code. How do you get the code? BUY THE SPECIAL CSUN PACKAGE. And you can't return it once you get the code because look back at the first picture and notice what the little white sticker says.

Well, okay! So I get a flimsy little booklet along with a little paper that has an access code inside. What can be so bad about it? OH slime. $80?!?!

THAT'S RIGHT. The most blatant scam of a scam you've ever seen! What exactly do you get for paying this much?

<img src="http://www.kittyandchicken.com/Images/r ... ntents.jpg">

You get THIS.

And guess what? The flimsy little booklet is 165 pages. And you know what's INSIDE?

<img src="http://www.kittyandchicken.com/Images/r ... side_1.jpg">

It's not even reading material. It's a tiny little WORKBOOK. Apparently they thought with the new age of technology we're in, everyone would be too lazy to just write down these simple questions and answer it themselves without paying insane prices for it.

Now as you can see, there is no way to justify that one should pay $80 for this... this THING.

Oh wait, perhaps THIS is why it's so costly!

<img src="http://www.kittyandchicken.com/Images/r ... _bonus.jpg">

THIS CARDBOARD MUST BE MADE OUT OF GOLD!

So what is it that we have here? A scam. Nothing more than a total scam. Think of how much it would even COST them to make such a flimsy package. Not even 10% of the selling price. This is big time PROFIT here we're talking about. Now why would they force you into buying this package by putting an online portion of it that is restricted without getting an access code, especially when it's not NEEDED? Considering that this class is a general education course all students must take, and that there are over 30,000 students in this school alone, at $80 a piece and 30,000 students, how much money is that?

I apologize if the excessive capitalized words were annoying, but there's no way around it. This is one scam that can't be avoided through buying older edition textbooks or just listening really carefully in class, or photocopying the material. This is something the university and textbook publishers carefully thought out so they could generate lots of money from poor students who have to work 10 hours on minimum wage pay to be ripped off. There simply is no justification for this, and we must make it STOP before pretty soon, they start requiring this for more and more classes.

slime THIS megaslime, YOU CAN'T KEEP SILENT ABOUT THIS AND EXPECT THINGS TO GET BETTER, IT'LL ONLY GET slimier. I think everyone who is going to college, has been through college, or is planning to attend college needs to step up and voice their concerns. If your rich slime mommy and daddy are paying for everything for you and you don't care, slime YOU, because the rest of us aren't putting up with it! This is not the first, nor will it be the last insane scam that the university and textbook companies are going to pull on us! We need to fight back before it gets worse!

$80?

That's terrible of course, but it's not terrible relative to other textbooks. The book for my CS class, which is just a regular book and not a big package like this, is $110 new and $85 used, and that's not too unusual, here at least.

I hate science workbooks though. We got one that was just hundreds of empty pages to write lab reports on, as if we couldn't just use regular paper for that.

EDIT: also I was surprised that megaslime isn't filtered.

I was also, and that's strange because I was sure Mogri made that filtered a while back?

Also, saying this is a big package is a big understatement, wouldn't you say? The whole thing weighs less than two pounds, cardboard included.

EDIT: slimier isn't filtered either apparently, or I just spelt it wrong.
