I'd just like to say that while I keep hearing about LCD Soundsystems, I honestly think they're a little boring. Dancey can be so much better than this.

They are signed now, but they spread their fame way beforehand, simply by making every song available for free on the internet. I recommend just about every song.

Hey guys, just wanted to make the comment that I actually got Panda Bear's Person Pitch album, and JSH was right. I'm very disappointed in it, after having high expectations. The guy seems to have mostly one trick (try to sound like Brian Wilson), and doesn't have the melodical skills to make up for it. Seriously, some stretches of the album just drag on with nothing interesting at all.

On the other hand, I also now own Deerhoof's Friend Opportunity and Of Montreal's Hissing Fauna, and both of these are living up to want I was hoping for, especially Of Montreal. Seriously, these guys can write vocal and bass melodies with the best of them, and when they bring the funk on top, you have to get in the groove. You just have to.

Other goodies from Christmas include Pavement's Brighten the Corners, and Gong's first two albums in the Radio Gnome trilogy. Captain Beefheart's Lick My Decals is also very good, but it is incredibly difficult to find on CD. If you haven't heard his album Trout Mask Replica yet though, and you are adventurous when it comes to music, you really must give it a listen. Nothing else I've heard is so 'off', and yet so 'on', like that album. Who writes and plays like that?

Top five albums of 2007
1. The Polyphonic Spree, The Fragile Army
2. Of Montreal, Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?
3. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Some Loud Thunder
4. Neil Young, Live At Massey Hall 1971
5. oh slime nothing else really jumps out as worthy of going on this list but i should totally check out Deerhoof's new one; i do know for a fact a lot of albums i wouldn't put here either because they haven't grown on me enough (Era Vulgaris, Icky Thump), rather disappointed me (Our Love To Admire, Zeitgeist), were far too novel (The Weirdness, The Dethalbum), or were just really boring (Weekend In The City). i could maybe go with Live At The Gorge 05/06 just for the sheer size of it, but oh slime all

5. Flight Of The Conchords, The Distant Future

On another note, today I downloaded The Queen Is Dead and gave The Smiths their very last chance to prove they are worth listening to. People have told me to pay more attention to the music and ignore Morrissey's horrible vocals to get the most out of the album, but I'm afraid this is just impossible, and even if it weren't, they The Queen Is Dead isn't so much an album I'd put on to listen to so much as one I'd put on to have something I could ignore on, except that when you've got the world's worst vocalist crooning and whining at you, it's not the sort of thing you can simply ignore. I got as far as "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out", the worst one yet at that point which features everything I hate about Morrissey's vocals by the armloads, when I got fed up with it altogether. By that time I was at work anyway, and the battery in my mp3 player had died. This upset me not only because it was just the beginning of the day and my battery was dead, but more so because I'd wasted all that battery listening to The Smiths.
Deleted. And not just that album, but anything I's ever had of there's and any chance I'd get more. (Except "Hand In Glove", I remember not hating that song.)

Top Five Artists Up Against The Wall When The Musical Revolution Comes
1. Morrissey
2. Slimin' Bono
3. Chris Martin
4. Peter Frampton
5. What the hell, everyone in Radiohead

and whaddayaknow, they're all from the british isles!
(excuse all the top fives, only just now finished reading High Fidelity)

I didn't spend enough time in '07 listening to new music. This is my horribly thought-out top 5 (excluding Neil Young at Massey Hall, which is a sliming 1971 release as far as I'm concerned):
1. Modest Mouse - We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank
Not their best album, but it's a definite grower. I've enjoyed a lot of the songs all year.
2. Menomena - Friend and Foe
Good Flaming Lips-esque indie pop. Short enough to not drive me insane (Hi of Montreal), insane enough to please me.
3. Interpol - Our Love to Admire
Like Uncy says, this one was pretty disappointing, but for some reason I can't stop listening to it. There must be SOMETHING good about it--it's no Antics though.
4. They Might Be Giants - The Else
Again, not their best album. "Climbing the Walls" has become one of my favorites of the year.
5. The White Stripes - Icky Thump
Not a big fan of this album, but it's the next best thing I listened to this year. The Stripes continue their downward spiral here.

There aren't TOO many artists I want to strangle, but I'd settle on:
John Mellencamp
Ian Curtis (Yes, I'd bring him back from the dead and strangle him if I could)
Every member of Oasis
Paris Hilton, if she counts.

Massey Hall was released in 2007! It counts!
Our Love To Admire did have a couple good tracks, but not enough to keep me listening to the whole album.

2007 was definitely a great year for me with music. New Reel Big Fish, Streetlight Manifesto, The Toasters, and a ton of other great ska bands had new cds. But there's one CD I really want, which might be out this year.

The new Green Day album. I liked American Idiot, but... it was such a huge hit, I wonna see if their next album has the "Dookie" effect. Where every album after their hit just becomes mediocre to the media.

Apparently the three of em made a side band and their stuff is out there to download, it's called "Foxboro and the Hot Tubs". It's like a cross between the Beatles and Dookie-era Green Day. Great stuff.

Hmm, I really enjoyed The Fragile Army a great deal, but I haven't gotten to know Icky Thump yet. Personally I find Get Behind Me Satan to be their best, so I couldn't call this a continuation of any downward spiral.

I can't believe you hate Radiohead that much though. I mean, they definitely aren't as great as everyone seems to claim, but that's not necessarily their fault. I think they're okay, and In Rainbows is a surprisingly good album in my opinion. If you dislike their pretention on their other releases, this might be the album for you.

I'm not sure who all I'd like to beat with a Catholic priest's golf club, but the list probably includes:
Bob Seger
Steve Miller
Whatever dunce started the whole "REM is really good" myth
Whatever fool started the whole "Dire Straits is any good at all" myth
Umm, maybe Billy Joel? If you don't play a keyboard, you may have trouble realizing just how horrible it is to be anywhere and hear people ask to hear Piano Man all the time. Not to mention that he is an atrocious songwriter.

Peter Frampton survives because of that hilariously horrible self-parody for that Geico commercial. Sure, the commercial is horrible, but at least it makes me believe that he has some inkling of how stupid his songs are.

I disagree (and am also a pianist). It sounds like you're just overexposed to one or two of his songs.

I don't know man, I had the album The Stranger and couldn't even sit through the whole thing. I had a friend at college who had a double-disc greatest hits, and I couldn't handle that either. I just hate his songwriting. Too much musical theater influence, perhaps. No soul at all (in my opinion). Good lord that Vietnam song that starts with the helicoptors is so bad!!!

I think that I just don't like clean, white piano-pop, which seems to be what Joel is all about. I don't like Harry Connick Jr. either. I'm sure he's probably a great piano player, but I can't sit through an album of his. I've kind of grown to appreciate a few Ben Folds songs, although I still don't like the guy's voice.

I know this is probably irrelevant, but I dunno how anyone can hate R.E.M. (but I'll ignore that since you probably have to get into them to really like them) and think the White Stripes are GETTING BETTER. The Stripes have been getting worse since De Stijl and it's obvious.

What the slime man.

But it's cool. Better to have a variety of opinions about music than a bunch of clones. Hell, I like The Smiths (a little), but I can see where Uncy's coming from.

I don't really hate REM. I hate whoever came up with the idea that they are really good. I think they're just sort of mediocre, with occasional brushes of minimalist goodness.

I'll admit that Get Behind Me Satan took me awhile, but now I like it best. I can't decide why, but I'm not huge on the Stripes anyway, and prefer Jack White's songwriting to his guitar spunk. That's not to say that the guitar spunk is not cool, but it gets old for me over the course of an album. But compared to the earlier ones, GBMS is so much more bizarre, while retaining the songwriting in my opinion. Once again though, this was not my first opinion of the album.

How is that Modest Mouse album, by the way? I really enjoyed Good News, but I can't get into Antarctica. There are some really good tracks on there, but the album as a whole is just was too cold or something.

We Were Dead... is sort of like a combination of Lonesome Crowded West and Good News... I can't say if you'd like it or not. Moon & Antarctica took me a very long time to appreciate as well. If I had to pick, I'd say the new album leans more toward their older material, but with a clear aim at airplay. It is their most depressing album by far, by the way.
