I know that this is an old topic, but I kind of wanted to get something off my chest about Vikings. I mean, people are all talking about the game as being furry related, and I have to be honest... The game honestly kind of offends me.

I have several problems with the story. The first one comes up when you start the game. You take control of a fairly cool looking anthropomorphic animal character. At this point, I am actually rather hyped up to play the game. ... until the game pulls the rug out from under my feet, takes her away from me and replaces her with generic human that ultimately kills my interest. This just feels like a complete bait and switch because I have no interest in The human characters, and genuinely do not enjoy playing as them in a video game, especially if you are going to promise anthropomorphic characters and then LIE to me.

But do you get furry characters later in the game? ...MAYBE? As far as I can tell, the furry character you start out with is never actually playable again, and oftentimes will only join the fight as an uncontrollable character. That is far as I know just looking into the data because I honestly did not want to play this game any further after that bait and switch. There are MAYBE two actual playable furries, but looking through the text Data, I couldn't find the strings that confirm you actually recruit them. The only ones that I could CONFIRM were playable were all humans, plus a pointy-eared human (no, I am not calling it an elf).

Then we have the antihero team. Instead of being completely limited to just humans and MAYBE two furries, it's made up of four completely different creatures. This is always a game and mood killer for me to see villains take so many different shapes and forms but see the heroes limited to just one species, and it's the one species I NEVER want to play as in a video game, a species I actively avoid playing as in a video game if I can, and if I can't, then I oftentimes struggle to enjoy a video game. It can still work for me, but you really need to make your world colorful and make it perfectly clear that the big bads intentions are going to affect life besides humans, while also showing other creatures as active in human Communities. If the good guys are only human, and fighting only to save humans against of villain that only wants to destroy humans, then your story is just going to come off as disgusting for me.

Let's talk about Bob the hamster for a moment. Once again, it honestly kind of offends me that you have to fight him. I know he's not technically a villain, but at the same time, he's not a hero either. Even if you did recruit him after fighting him, the fact that you had to fight him at all kind of upsets me. Surprisingly, Bob the hamster is not the only mascot character to appear in this game. Super walrus, the mascot for the makers of Walthross, is also a monster you can fight in this game.

But I think what really offends me the most about the games is that there was supposedly a big war between furries and humans where, again, humans and only humans were the good guys, while furries get shafted and have to be banished to this particular place. This does not make me feel good. This does not make me want to keep playing, and honestly makes me regret looking more into it the game because it left a pit in my stomach. I felt the same way about Tales of Vesperia when I realized I had to kill a whole bunch of good guy monsters. Not only did I not want to play further, but I regretted looking the story up.

I know this is an old topic, but again, this was something I've always wanted to get off my chest involving Vikings.

You get 2 wolf people on your team in the later half of the game.
More than 2 mascots appear in the game. The game is a collection of different mascots.
Vikings of Midgar isn't really a furry game. It's more like a furry gateway drug.
You think you're just playing a normal RPG with maybe a dog person thrown in here and there.
But after beating the game you receive a certificate that you are in fact a level 1 dog person now.

Your tastes are your tastes, Benny, I can't tell you what to like.

That said... I personally find your reaction just utterly ridiculous. If it's a good game, it's a good game. Period. Assuming it is a good game, the only thing ruining it for you is, frankly, on you.

Guess I need to go play Alien Squatter and crap all over it because there aren't any human characters.

(C'mon dude).

Okay, Benny, idea:

All the assets of Vikings are free to use. I've heard Fen say he'd love for people to take the assets and make their own spinoffs with it. I'm encouraging you to do so!

No worries, the tone of the game completely changes about halfway through. You'll know what I mean once you get to it ;)

Ugh... just ugh.

Sometimes, if a game is depressing or upsetting, and has heroes you can't stand plus villains you like too much to want to fight or kill, it doesn't matter how good the gameplay is, it's not going to be an enjoyable experience. That's what matters most to me in a game is the overall experience. You can have great gameplay, but the game could still provide an unenjoyable experience overall if you don't like the characters, story, lore, or the villains AS villains.

see, funny thing. I have a similar issue with vikings, there simply are not enough bananas. I mean I played for five minutes and there wasn't a single banana to be found. it's not like I can just make my own game I like you know.
Have a flower! ^-^~* (she/her)

I told you Benny, I can't tell you what your tastes are.

What I *am* telling you, is you're being absolutely ridiculous. Why play games if you're not there for the game? Watch some porn, it'll take up less of your day.

Good god, I should have known that people would rather be assholes about things and tell me I have a mental illness or that my opinions are stupid and wrong and that I have to change for the rest of the world then to understand how I feel or why I have those opinions in the first place. They expect me to play video games that are painful and disgusting for me, and do not make me feel good inside, all because "oh, it's the GAME PLAY that's important. That's ALL that matters."

I play video games to play video games, but I still want to like and appreciate the characters Within the video games, as well as the story and lore. I'm sorry that I cannot enjoy a game that lies to me, forces me to play as characters I don't like or care about until I'm halfway through the game or so, Dives me into a story that is upsetting to the point where I regret going further into the game, or makes the villains ten times more interesting and likable to me than the heroes by giving them creative designs and Charming personalities that appeal to me while giving the good guys generic designs and weak or no personality that make me wish I was playing as something else, but I don't. People always feel like they can just change how I feel about media, but everytime I State my opinions and get hostility, that just makes me repulse stuff more.

I'm sure the person put a lot of work and effort into the game, but as it stands, I cannot enjoy the experience of the game. Please stop trying to be a jerk about things. Hostility just breeds more hostility.

We're always being persecuted, banished to such places like this. Maybe to some people, we'll always be the bad guys. Can't stand those pointy-eared humans either. Not fooling anybody.

But to answer your questions: Yes, you get furry characters later in the game. Furries aren't the bad guys in it. Hati's in the game (kind of a Big Deal). Enemies based on ohrrpgce characters don't seem malicious, quite the opposite. I think maybe the main author of the game is a furry, but I'm not sure.

Otherwise, I feel you. Expectations can make or break a game's enjoyment. Sometimes we're not in the mood to enjoy a game for what it is. We don't have to think of them as humans, if it helps. One can be eye-patch sticky finger lady. Another, drunken berserker who dresses as a hamster. Artimus, a bena. And so on.

Can't disagree with that. Overall experience should be what matters most to anyone. The quality of many of the different components of a game can be somewhat objectively rated, but much less so for things like plot and character design, and overall experience is highly subjective.

But even character design is to an extent objectively good or bad. And bad characters (in particular uninspiring protagonists) is possibly where more RPGs fall flat than on any other aspect. Sounds like you're making a mixture of objective and (mostly) subjective complaints about the characters in Vikings. I don't think there's much that can be discussed about subjective complaints rooted in taste, except to agree or disagree.

Vikings is likely the least furry game Fenrir ever made.
So, being upset that it wasn't more furry makes a bit of sense.
Like when squaresoft makes a non-rpg.

But as the above person suggests, there are other OHR games that do fulfill the furry hype.
That Hati Game is a good one.
There's also some of Fenrir's other games, like Meh or that halloween one.
There's also a good amount of games that were made with the vikings graphics that can be found by sorting the gamelist be lowest rating.
