Gorgonzola stable release planning thread

Post by Bob the Hamster »

Fufluns is released, lets plan the next stable release!

How about a 12 week release goal?

That would mean trying to release on the weekend of April 3/4 2020

What do we want to call the next release?

I say TMC and I will pick what we agree we like best, but we are open to any suggestions.

Codename must:
* Start with the letter "g"
* Be relatively obscure
* Not collide too much with the naming of anything software or gaming related
* Be liked by myself and TMC

EDIT: and we have a winner, "gorgonzola"

As for things I hope to get accomplished in the next release, I will keep my own ambitions modest. I am mostly concerned with keeping our build system reasonably stable, and doing what I can to support TMC's goals for the release

Ah, the naming ritual returns.

Here are some fun ideas (most of these are mashups or puns, probably nothing you'll find in a dictionary):

gooseberry (real word)
glowbunny
glitterbug
genesizzle
gratuity (real word)

I don't want to go through this whole list, but here's a good resource for real G words that are obscure for anyone who wants to hunt for a good one.

Although I haven't started my official tease for it yet, the next (and likely final) Heart of the OHR will begin in May, in case you wanted to tie-in the G release with the window somehow, or at least stick to a specific series of release goals so that it can come out before the window closes.

grafology - divination by studying writing

The sound of the word isn't superb, but the meaning adds a lot of fun to it.

EDIT:

Holy Slime. Or this.

graptomancy - divination by studying handwriting

gigantomachy - War of giants against gods
Gede-olgudach - Pictish king
gorgoneion - Representation of a gorgon head

Also, last time someone suggested Frogmagog, which was based on Gogmagog, so that one's definitely worth a look. Since it was so good they couldn't even wait for the proper letter.

Gleipnir - A silken ribbon stronger than the toughest chain, made by the dwarves out of six impossible things. This one would be especially appropriate IF Vikings had a release candidate by then, eh?

Guinea Pig - The Hamster Republic accepts all kinds of rodents, right?

Gynoid - Lady robot.

Gargantua - ludicrous giant from 16th century Rableais novel, "The Life of Gargantua and of Pantagruel"

Glockenspiel - xylophone-like musical instrument with bright clear sound

Gymnopaedia - war dance of Spartan youth

Gnossienne(s) - any several dance-like music pieces (invented by composer Erik Satie);
- a moment of awareness that someone you’ve known for years still has a private and mysterious inner life, and somewhere in the hallways of their personality is a door locked from the inside, a stairway leading to a wing of the house that you’ve never fully explored—an unfinished attic that will remain maddeningly unknowable to you, because ultimately neither of you has a map, or a master key, or any way of knowing exactly where you stand.(from dictionary of obscure sorrows)

Galavant.

Loving a lot of these names proposed so far; more than half of them, even.

Oh wow, we're already looking forward to the G release? I didn't realize we'd gotten Fufluns as a stable release until just now... I've really been out of the loop with OHR stuff the past few months to a year, I guess.

Anyway... I see nobody has suggested Gorgonzola, Medusa's favorite cheese, for the name possibilities yet.

Some other possibilities that come to mind:
  • Guadalajara (city in Mexico, I just happen to like how the name sounds)
    Gobsmacked
Gundark (I vaguely recall this being the name of some sort of six-armed monkey aliens in Star Wars at some point?)
Gobernated (weird... typo-ish?... thing I saw somebody make once on an old forum)

Another name suggestion that begins with G: Gambeson, body armor made out of multiple layers of cloth (usually cheap linen, sometimes other textiles like silk or cotton).

I would second all of these suggestions:

Grinagog
Gyrovague
Gleipnir
Gynoid
Gorgonzola

Those are all great.

My top favorite is grinagog, but the more I think about it, the more I like the idea of naming the next release after cheese.
