A friend and I just released a small free album if anyone is interested. The genre is sort of an experimental/trip hop electronic thing...

I've been making a lot more music recently, for games and for fun. I guess I should be sharing it here and not just over on Discord.

https://soundcloud.com/kiefernemeth/red-mustard
<iframe></iframe>

I made this the other day while hanging out at someone's house.

Oh, and since I'm getting more into making music, I want to mention that if anyone is ever looking for original tracks for their games, I'd be more than happy to contribute/collaborate. There's a Soundtrack playlist on my Soundcloud that has all the stuff I've made for various projects, if you're interested :v:

Edit: can't get the song to embed as an iframe. I guess that's not supported.

This sounds nice. I'm typically a fan of downbeat, and this track does everything I want after a tough day. Good stuff.

I'm generally on the lookout for musical contributors, though I'd want a style that matches the game's genre. Right now, I'm focused on Entrepreneur: The Beginning and fairly happy with its soundtrack as it is, but I'm not happy, nor have I been happy since 2010, with the low volume of tracks contained in it. I had envisioned a reasonably diverse score of about 24 songs and instrumentals that I can use across various times of day and places. I have 11 originals at the moment, but the composer has since moved on to other things without providing all of the tracks I had asked for. I'd still like to round out my soundtrack if possible with a decent score that sets the mood for all possible situations the player may find himself in. I also have two commercial songs that I want to replace as I don't carry their licenses, nor can I afford to buy them, as they generally run well into the thousands, tens of thousands, or even hundreds of thousands of dollars to use legally, and, well, I ain't rich.

My plan for the game is to eventually release it on Steam, and if necessary, write a "deluxe version" in a different engine like Unity (which I'd still have to learn, so this would not happen for a long time), where I might have more control over presentation and UI. I wouldn't start that project until I've finished the OHR version, and that's only if the OHR is still limited in its ability to allow me to accomplish every goal I have for the game.

If I do a Steam release, I'd want to consider a soundtrack release to go with it, with sales going strictly to the composers. This would mean stripping out the commercial bookend songs altogether (which I'm going to do anyway for the 1.3 release, whether I have decent replacements or not, as they really shouldn't be in there in the first place). All tentative, of course. I'm nowhere near the stage where that's possible, but the work I've been doing the last year will get me there much faster than the pace I've been on in the years prior.

Adding to the soundtrack would mean composing in reasonably 80's-style instruments, with a heavy emphasis on synth tracks, or swing pop, or bass. Basically similar to the tracks that are already in there, but with different goals depending on the time of day and place. It would also mean composing a new intro song or track to replace "Cruel Summer." I generally leave the sound up to the composer, however. As long as it sounds like it could work for the time period, I'll probably be happy with it.

Regarding the two unlicensed commercial songs, I actually just recorded three songs in the last seven days to replace the title screen song, the end game song, and one of the shop soundtracks, but they are in a capella, as I don't play instruments, so they work but aren't totally ideal. Scoring any of those songs would be interesting to say the least, but that might be a little too crazy. I don't know. I'd leave that up to discretion.

Because downbeat and coffee go well together, I could see how merging a downbeat sound with an 80s sound would really awesome up the soundtrack, and if that's something you'd want to consider, let me know. I have a list of songs I still want, though I'd have to find it, and because the game and its music needs have changed so much since my original plan, I'd probably just rewrite it anyway.

At any rate, your music is good. Nice job.

I really like Red Mustard, but I love Showers! It's hard to avoid imagining a place and a story while listening to it. (Helped along by the ambient noises in the background)

@Pepsi: I'm always down to try new styles. If you give me a track you want with when it plays during gameplay, what specific emotion/aesthetic you want it to evoke, and any other bits you know about it (eg. Instrumentation, tempo, key, etc.), I can whip up a demo. It typically doesn't take me longer than a few hours to lay down the basic structure of a song. From that point, you can tell me what you love/hate about it, and I can edit and finalize it from there. Replacing a few licensed songs is definitely something I can do.

@tmc: I love to hear that! Showers is played during the finale of a VR game I'm currently composing for. I don't think the website for the game is live yet. Otherwise, I would share that here. The lead designer guided me to the Child of Light soundtrack for the kind of music she wanted. This song in particular, The Highest of the High, was definitely a strong inspiration behind Showers.

Cool deal. I generally trust the musician with all of that stuff more than I trust myself, so the best plan is for me to send you a list of scenarios that I would want new music for, and since you've played the game, you can probably already get a feel for how it might fit in. I'd essentially give you free reign to come up with something that you'd find appropriate for that specific scenario. This is what I did for Mr. 8-bit, and he gave me a soundtrack that really works. I just needed twice the number of tracks he had time to produce.

I'll more than likely include example songs for you to listen to to get the vibe I'd like for respective sections, but really, it would be your sandbox to play in at the end of the day. Ideally, you should enjoy creating music for the project, but also consider what type of song would get you to enjoy that part of the game more. You can also take your time with it. Some of these tracks would be included into a later version, so I wouldn't need them for a while (I can think of two or three I'd like sooner than later, but I would also tag each request with a priority marker, so you'll have a plan to work with).

The only thing I'm sure I don't want is something that sounds like an RPG. It's not that kind of game. The other thing you can do to get in the right mood for the soundtrack is to watch the original Karate Kid and, if you can find it, Better Off Dead, as those are the two movies that most strongly influence this game. I'd also recommend a viewing of The Breakfast Club, as the soundtrack for that movie is the ideal music type for this game. It would also be a good idea to listen to the actual soundtrack, which you could probably find on YouTube (it's quite good). But, blending that style with your downbeat chill style would make for an interesting mashup, if it works. I'd certainly recommend giving it a try.

If I have time tomorrow, I'll PM you a list of requests, and you can do with them what you want at your leisure. I can also prepare a free range version of the game for you to explore in the coming week(s) to give you a chance to see some of the upcoming areas, and other things that may not be readily available in the current demo, to give you something to work with.

A free roam build with the existing tracks in would be great. I mainly mention qualities you want from a song because it can help me on the right track to what you envision for your own game. The movie soundtrack bases are great. I'll go watch those again and listen to what they've got going on. I also have some artists in mind that tend to make a downbeat-80s blend that I may draw inspiration from. I'll be in touch.

Been working on some new styles of music....

This one's sort of a hardvapor style with lot's of MGS samples:

And these one's are unfinished remixes but might be familiar songs if you've played Final Fantasy VII:

I just finished an album recently and forgot about sharing it here until now. The album is free to download and includes an older Metal Gear Solid remix of mine that was featured on Game Chops awhile back!

Please give it a listen and let me know what you think! This type of music is a lot faster and different from what I normally make. I made about half of each song using code and then finished them off in a DAW to arrange and record in lead synthesizer sounds.

You can listen to the album here:

In addition I also recently made a little live session to test out a second-hand mixer I recently purchased. It's a bit of a slow jam but picks up a lot towards the end...

After a few years of hiatus in composing music (and an even longer hiatus from OHRRPGCE), I started up an OHR adaptation project of a Cyberpunk story idea of mine, "Sylphen Green". In doing so, I've come to see that I'm a bit out-of-practice with pixel-art stuff, but can still manage fairly decently (and it did give an excuse to practice with vector art, since I'm still working at getting decent with it).

I did do two pieces of music, a couple days ago, for at least the start of things, in the project (and only waited until now to post them because I wanted to make a soundtrack cover art for it). Since most of my music is normally Film-Score Orchestral, I created a monicker/logo, "PseudoDragon", to use when posting any of the Synthwave stuff that I've been wanting to experiment with for some time.

1) "Underunner (Theme of Sylphen Green)" (SoundCloud)

2) "Sanctuary" (SoundCloud)

I love a good cyberpunk theme, and "Underunner" is definitely a good one. Excellent work.

I like the other one, too, but it has a "happier" aesthetic, which I'd have to see in context to really get it. It's still good, though.

Sorry for the delayed response; I was on vacation.

In hindsight, I do agree with you that "Sanctuary" sounds a bit too light-hearted. The music is meant for a scene that takes place in an astral plane, and my original intent was for the music to create a surreal atmosphere that was going to be melancholic and reflective of the life left behind by the main character. When I ran the opening scene with the music, it still kinda worked even though I do feel like it may be a bit too "positive" (for lack of a better word) considering the conversation going on in the scene is a mix of "missing the way things were" and "now being bitterly nihilistic about the way things have become".

I attempted to make more music over my break, but was running into the same issue of the music not being bleak enough for what I'm going for. Normally I don't have this problem when scoring a scene, but in attempting to do Orchestral Synthwave, I'm playing with a genre of music that I'm grossly inexperienced with, so I'm still getting my bearings with that particular sound (I mostly just do Filmscore Orchestral stuff) and enjoying the challenge of working with a new genre.

Thank you for your input.

Did a few more pieces for Sylphen Green over the course of my last two work-weekends.

3) "Husk" (music for wandering the streets in the starting area)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBYgW8UqxyE

4) "Corridor" (used primarily for a monologue scene recapping the dark practices of the story's antagonist faction, but will likely also be used for sneaking scenes)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkEu2Ii6tF4

5) "Let's Do This (Battle Theme)" (I went a bit more "techno" on it, since I wanted to make sure the piece you'll be hearing a fair amount of would at least be catchy and fun to follow)
