Caskbow smiles at Hyne's words as she goes back up on deck.

Tip says "Go ahead and rest. There will be plenty of time to meet everyone else later." She turns her eyes back to her clipboard.

Hyne finally heads to bed. As he prepares to tuck in he looks for a place to look for his belongings so that they cannot be easily stolen without him being woken him but it may be difficult in this setting. He gently taps parts the bed frame to see if it will make a noise or rattle easily.

Hyne is in a small room with two bunks.

The bunk's bedframes are built right into the wall, and seems like the work of a master carpenter. Nothing on the bedframe squeaks or rattles, neither on the lower bunk or the upper bunk.

At the foot of each bunk is a small flat chest, also built right into the wall.

The chest on the upper bunk has a padlock on it. There are also a few items of clothing scattered on the upper bunk.

The lower bunk is neatly made. The chest is slightly ajar. It has no padlock, but there is a place to attach one, if Hyne had one. The lid does not squeak, but it makes series of soft clicking when it opens.

The inside of the chest is broad and flat and not very tall. It smells like cedar.

Under the bottom bunk there are some wood-shavings on the floor.

Hyne leans down and begins feeling under the bed to where the bed aligns with the shavings. He isn't sure if it came from some kind of attempt to break into the chest in the past, or termites eating away at the wood making the bed unstable.

There is no indication of where the wood shavings came from. The wood shavings are from a soft light-colored wood that does not match any of the other wood in the room.

Once he realizes that the wood is a foreign substance, he draws a knife to scoop a bit of it up to examine a bit more closely.

Hyne does not recognize the specific wood. It smells nice, just a little sappy and sweet.

He tries to think. Somebody must have brought their own wood here from a far place. For a moment his mind flashes an image of the mute man whittling away at a block of wood. He turns back to Tip then asks, "Was somebody at this bed before me? It looks like somebody might've been wood carving and didn't clean up."

Tip peeks around the partition and looks at the bed that Hyne is indicating. She checks her clipboard.

"Nope. Nobody has claimed that one yet. Grumbar has the top bunk there. I don't think he carves wood... at least, I've never seen him do it."

He goes back to the shavings.. he decides to double check to make sure that the individual wood shavings would have indeed been shaved by a blade of some sort or some other tool before thinking of a way to secure his belongings and turning in.

A second, closer examination of the wood shavings confirms Hyne's suspicions. These are exactly the sort of bits that would fall if someone was carving or whittling by hand with a knife.
