Community project Tileset (c.c.T.c.c) - volume 1

Post by Wendigo »

Welcome Slimes and Hamsters to the first cooperative community Tileset creation contest (c.c.T.c.c)

What on earth is that?
The c.c.T.c.c is a cooperative competition with the aim to create free to use Tilesets for the O.H.R.RPG.C.E. engine. Everyone is welcome to participate. Just download the current version of the "ccTcc1.rpg", add some tiles and re-upload.
The Tileset will be licensed under CC-0 so it can be used freely in commercial and non commercial projects without the need to mention the author.
When the Tileset is finished I'm going to upload it to Bitbucket so that we can link to it in the wiki.

Technical stuff:

Tilesets:
  • You will find two Tilesets in the RPG file.
"exterior" is for landscape, house fronts and the like
"interior" is for rooms in a house, dungeons and stuff

    Perspective: 3/4 (JRPG standard)
The upper 8 rows are reserved for single frame tiles without animation
The lower 2 rows are reserved for animated tiles. Please limit animations to 3 frames.
Maps:
  • The test maps consist of 3 layers
Layer 1 "background" is for drawing the basic ground tiles and walls of the map
Layer 2 "foreground" is for drawing items like crates, tables, ...
    Layer 3 Heros and NPCs
Layer 4 "floating" is for everything on top of the player like treetops
Please use the current stable "Callipygous+1 (released June 6 2016)" for editing so we wont run into any version conflicts.

Rules:
This is the first attempt to create a community Tileset so we will keep things simple.
  • - Try to imitate the art style of your predecessors to keep a consistent look.
    - The Tileset shall be in 3/4 ratio thus usable in a normal RPG project.
    - Stick to the standard master pallet please.
    - Use as few colours as possible and as many as needed.
    - Feel free to create tiles that span over multiple cells.
    - You may edit other peoples tiles (add shading, rearrange perspective, divide it into different layers, etc.) but please don't replace them completely.
As this is the first attempt to a community Tileset I'd like to keep the artstyle simple.
Here are some screen shots from Pokemon on Gameboy Advance as a reference.
They are just to get some inspiration, no need to copy the art style.

How to participate:
  • - Download the current version of the "ccTcc1_xx.rpg" (where "xx" stands for the current version).
    - Add a place holder post to this thread saying something like "I'm next" in order to block the thread and avoid chaos
    - Draw some tiles and add them to the sample maps
    - Increase the version number of the RPG file by one digit, upload your "ccTcc1_[xx+1].rpg" to a filehoster of your choice and post the download link together with some screen shots of your tiles
    - Next one please ...
If you want to discuss something please use this thread in order to keep the challenge clean:

I'll give you an example by starting first:

I'm adding a few tiles.

Still wide open for someone to define the specific style of the tileset, and I'm not really going to do that, but I do get to steer the setting a bit...

EDIT: Done. Sorry for taking so long, I really procrastinated. And sorry for veering a bit away from plain untextured graphics towards more grainy stuff, which is what I always end up drawing... there wasn't much to work with!
I like ruins, so that's what I started working towards. But it's still wide open for the next person.

My additions to the map are nothing serious. There aren't enough tiles to start building a real map, so feel free to redo the map.

Added water, paths, and elevated ground. Will prolly start making trees sooner or later, unless someone else wants to take them of course.

Here's the rpg file.

Link's to my Google drive. And on that note, I should get a better place to do quick uploads for stuff like this.

Editing the file. Will update this post with an .rpg upload.

EDIT: On second thought, I don't actually know what I want to do with this, so I might bow out.

Editing (will be done in a few min)

Eeek, that took far too long.
http://tmc.castleparadox.com/ohr/ccTcc/ccTcc1_05.rpg

I didn't draw anything, instead I rearranged the tileset (trying to leave the bottom for possible animations), put the tree on a black background so that it can be stacked on top of itself, and added some default walls.

I added a second overhead layer to the map, but it turns out that to be able to freely copy-paste the tree next to itself in any arrangement without manual fixups, you actually need to use 3 overhead layers. I decided to avoid the complexity of a third overhead layer, but if anyone wants to create a forest you will definitely want to add another layer.

Added a bare-bones log cabin. Plenty of room left to add windows, cracked walls, signs, chimneys, etc...
