Mikey

Post by Meatballsub »

Preface
-------
Some of you may have noticed that I removed the download for The Adventures of Mikey T a few days ago. This title tied for first place (along with Jailbreak) for the 2008 8-bit contest.

I chose to remove it because the man the game is based upon passed away a couple years ago, and I was not comfortable with leaving it available to the public after that.
--------

Have said that, Mikey's legacy will not die. I've chosen to take the ideas from the original game and create something brand new. What this allows me to do is expand upon the original ideas, and rework some of the personal things in the first one that should be removed in honor of the dead. Best of all, it will include an original soundtrack; making it eligible for Android, OUYA and Steam platforms as well.

I like the adventure-based ideas in the original game, but I want to improve on them this time. Here's a little bit of what to expect in the new game:

-Set in the 1980s USA, when camaros and mullets ruled the world
-Heavier emphasis on exploration. Main game takes place in a massive, single-map city that has 50 detailed, fully explorable locations within it.
-Improved combat mechanics and a transition to first person, Earthbound inspired battles.
-Karma. If you are a slime, people (and law enforcement) will know. It will affect the ending as well.
-Original soundtrack by Glock and Mr8Bit
-Graphics by Shea Kennedy
-Hot dogs

I'll be posting some things about the project here periodically, so check back for updates!

Dude, cool it on the dithering. The smaller sprites you have there are far too small for that technique to be effective, and the less said about that hot dog bun the better.

Yeah, I'll bet these sprites would benefit from little to no dithering-- or at least just limit it to the hair, or parts of the skin that are intended to look wrinkley.

I will dudes. I should say it's very much a WIP as the game file itself is only a couple days old. I'll be sure to cut back on dithering from here on out though.

The shading on the hot dog makes it look sleazy, I like it. If it's meant to be a shady sleaze dog, anyway. Looking forward to the project!

Thanks dudes. I didn't realize how terrible it was until it was pointed out. But if this project anything like my others, the graphics will be overhauled at least two or three times before release.

This thread needs more hot dog discussion, though. Keep at it.

In closing, this.

I played the original Mikey T last year and liked it. I thought the timer was annoying (although it was fairly generous), and I also thought it was too linear. So the changes you suggested sound great.

Thanks, and I agree about the linearity of the original. But there was only so much I could squeeze into a game that had to be started and finished within a week's time (as per the contest rules). I think you will enjoy the game much more this time around.

I'm pleased to announce that this is still a thing and it should see a lot of progress in 2016.

Shea Kennedy has signed on to do the graphics, while Glock and Mr8Bit will be providing the soundtrack. When a decent chunk of content is available, I'll update again.

Definitely needs some touch ups for sure (you can see some white on the logo as well, which I may not even use at all). May not even be the final name of the game, but I thought the play on fight or flight given the context of the game was pretty slime.
