Need Opinions
This is very much a WIP sprite but I'm torn between two different styles and it has halted my progress.
Which do you think is a better base?
Or

Thanks guys.
TMC, the reason for the formless patches is that this guy is supposed to be a severe burn victim. The patches themselves are supposed to be the burn spots and/or leftover skin.
But having a second look I do think that the patches themselves are too large and his "charred" skin is too smooth. It is definitely a cape he's wearing. I guess it's just me shading it the best way that I know for now.
Here's a second draft with an alternative skin tone and a tiny bit of dithering to give the skin a more rough appearance. I think I may be moving in the right direction but any suggestions are appreciated.

I like the first version of your latest draft. As a suggestion, I think you should make his arms longer. If you want to get a good idea of how long arms are normally, just stand up and place your arms at your side. Your finger tips should be well past your waist line. It looks like his arms would just barely reach his waist line if he extended them straight down. Or alternatively if you are trying to pull off foreshortening (ie. his arms are coming out of the screen, and in to the screen), then I'd suggest to add more shading to emphasize that, though I don't think that's what you intended. Looks very nice and detailed so far!

Never heard of Vacman, what's the pump do? And it's been years since I've seen a stretch arm-strong toy. Probably since before I moved to England in the early 90s, actually.

Dude, stop.
Look at your arm, and then back to the arms of this dude. Notice how there's two parts to it, and that it varies in width, instead of whatever's going on with your dude's arms?
The legs are even worse. Where are his knees? Why are his legs just long knobbly rectangles? Why doesn't he have anything resembling hips? Where are his feet?
The cape seemed alright up until I realized that the shading didn't have anything to do with how it actually folded. Seriously, that's the easiest thing to fix - just shade where the cape's going away from your light source [which is... where? From the left?] and highlight where it's directly in it, and doing the same highlighting/darkening for exterior/interior creases.
All this boils down to one thing, though - I'm getting the impression that you have no idea how the form of anything you are drawing really works. You're shading, but it doesn't have much to do with the forms of the stuff you're shading. You're dithering, but with it you're just adding noise, without adding much actual information. I mean, just look at this. It's a complete mess - it looks flat, half the thing is noise, and it doesn't even look like goop [or whatever that character is supposed to be].
I really don't know, man.

Sorry if I offended you with my art, but we all have to start somewhere. I know that I'm slowly improving on my own level of art, though it isn't necessarily at the level of what others deem "appropriate" or "acceptable". I never once suggested that I'm a great artist, though I do feel I've improved drastically since I began with the OHRRPGCE over 10 years ago.Pheonix wrote:Dude, stop.

I do appreciate your feedback, though I'm not sure what you "really don't know, man".
