Interesting. Turns out on Linux, you press CTRL+SHIFT+u and then type the number, but you have to type it in hexidecmal instead of decmal, so
CTRL+SHIFT+ue9 = é

If I need to type accented characters I change the keyboard layout to US International or Dutch. The regular US keyboard layout (plus rearrangements like Dvorak) must be the only one in the Western world that doesn't let you type accented Latin characters.

I find using a compose key to be the most useful. Makes it so you don't have to remember all of those codes and whatnot. It's mostly intuitive.
