I like the idea of being able to use different guns in battle. I don't like the idea of not having them equipped, however. Especially since I wanted to add a mastery system for every different weapon, which would be almost impossible without making chain attack after chain attack, which I just plain don't want to do.
All that aside, using guns as items in battle would just look funny. The hero would appear as though he was swinging his equipped weapon, but firing whatever gun they used as an item. It just wouldn't work very well with THIS game. I'm sure somebody else could take that idea and run with it, though.

You could fake equips with tags. Use a gun from your inventory -> set a matching tag. It would still be a pain to do.

Trying out some spritebuilding... here's the base enemy from my game:

Right: The older sprite from earlier in the thread, with one or two very mild revisions
Left: Something I sketched in 20 minutes and sprited in another 30.
The left sprite is a lot more boring (because I did it quickly), but I think it's ultimately closer to where I want to go. Which means I'm probably going to have to throw out the right sprite, but...ah well?
I'm honestly unsure how I feel about these two sprites side-by-side. Neither of them are all that great, but....enh.

I actually like the one on the left a lot more. It reminds me of the style of the old Sierra point and click adventure games.
Here's a quick little edit I did to try to tighten up some things I saw.

I touched up the eyes a little to make her look more real. I tried to bend the ankles a bit so she didn't look so straight-legged, but I don't know how well that worked. I lowered the shoulders (they were really blocky before) and moved the arms closer to her body. I tweaked her hair a little as well.
The extra pixels that are floating around I think came from importing / exporting. Feel free to use all or none of my ideas. Use the whole picture if you want. I'm no artist or anything, but I think it looks a little better.

Might as well have my own turn at the sprite improvement game. I feel that a better palette (or at least one with another shade of purple to go around) would've been better, but whatever.

I wonder if you could find a way to tweak the contrast around the face to separate the hair and the skin a bit more. I have to strain my eyes to see where the bangs end and the face begins. Otherwise, I like your take on the sprite.

I made this because I was feeling artsy:

I call it giboo. Feel free to use it, as long as you credit me for it.

As the prison guard was perhaps the first enemy sprite I made for Legacy, I thought it fitting that I'd revise the enemy graphics starting with him.
I'm not sure about the pose. Perhaps I should have him pointing the spear to the right?
Edit:
Like this perhaps?

Nice! I like the sprite
I like both spear poses. Have you considered that you could make two identical copies of the enemy, giving one sprite to each. It would give a nice bit of visual variety to formations that had more than one of these guys.

Hmm, that's not a bad idea actually. And it would be a trivial matter to implement. I'll go with using both of them then.
...
Or maybe even three of them? Gah! No, go not down that path BMR, or you shall never finish your game!

Remember that Tyrannosaurus sprite I did waaaaay back last year, about 16 months ago? This one here:
It was nice, but I wanted to go back and touch it up sometime. I ended up just starting from scratch again, and here is the result:
Finally, decent shading. I also gave it more exaggerated proportions (mainly the head) and a more interesting pose. Much better imo.
Here's a few more monster sprites I've done in the meantime:
A giant fly.
A very angry treant.
A cyclopean jelly.
A wispish entity.
A mighty dragon. I feel like this one could use a bit more work, but I'm not sure how.
A sword-wielding lamia. This one might need a little tweaking too. Fun fact: I was originally going to give it hair and more jewelry, but I ran out of space on the palette.
And finally, a kappa. Let me know what you think.
