The hero sprite is great, too. I love his cape from the back angle. The edges are executed really well.
Foxley wrote:Thank you, I got the idea of just transposing every column up by 1, then 2, etc. based on a regular horizontal tile (which is the flat part of the roof). So I basically used one tile to make a bunch of angled tiles by using mark+copy in a really tedious handmade process.
Also that makes a lot of sense now that I look at the roof more closely. That seems deceptively simple, but I can't argue with good results. I might use the same technique myself if I'm ever angling tiles.

kylekrack wrote:@Foxley: Those rooftops are great. The shading made it even better, but even without, I was impressed with the multiple levels of steepness. It's that kind of minor detail that makes a game look that much better, and one that I think a lot of people neglect to tend to.
@BMR: Definitely an improvement if you ask me. You have a really distinct style, I noticed it during the random animal combo contest. It always made me quite envious, over how professional it looks. This also reminds me a lot of Fire Emblem for the GBA, for some reason.
I just want to echo both of these statements.
@Foxley -The rooftiles look great, in my opinion, and I envy the patience that must have been employed while doing them! I've only done a little work like that (3 point perspective brick walls with shading... ugh) and had to take many, many breaks to ponder my math.
@BMR - Being new-ish here, I've only been familiar with your recent stuff, contest entries and the like, which are all (infuriatingly!) great! I appreciate that you posted something from before you had refined your skills, it gives hope to a schlepp like me!

Foxley wrote:Few different candidates for pants/leggings coloration. Still unsure which I'll be going for, probably the third one though.
I kinda like the second one best, actually, with the third being a close second. I feel like there's a bit too much going on with the third one, while the simplicity of the second is slightly more appealing. The detail in the third one is great though, and if you went with that instead I'd say it's still a pretty good choice.

Thanks

I dunno about looking professional. If you want stuff that looks really professional, there's the stuff by Valigarmander, Fenrir, vampi, etc... As for Fire Emblem, I wouldn't really know, I've never played the game. Heh, I've never even owned any sort of Gameboy before.

To go along with the hero and enemy sprites I've already posted in the contest thread...
...which I've now reposted here...
...finally, a screenshot! Yep, first map of the game is now in a technically-playable state. Not much to do but wander and check out the scenery at this point, but there is a lot of that (I've filled up most of a tileset with just the general floor/wall tiles and the furniture found in the living room alone... will need lots o' layers and another tileset for the rest!) nearly every random object has a textbox associated with it, as seen above.

I drew some concept art for a character in a game I'm currently writing. This was the first time I've ever made pixel art without a 24 color limitation, and I must say, it was quite liberating.
EDIT: It's a woman, in case you were wondering.

@kylekrack:
I really like the style and, the fluffy background and the color choice of the picture. Especially the face is well done.
The heavy jacket and the hat rather help to hide that's it's a woman on the picture.
I'm not sure if it goes well with the intended style, but you might try to give the person on the picture wider hips.
Just a rougth sketch:

Womans body can be thought of like being 8 shaped, while men's body can be thought of being triangle-shaped.
At the moment it's rather hard to tell, if the character is male or female.
But otherwise it lookes really good.

I've been doing a lot of mapping in Tim-Tim 2 "The Almighty Gnome". I really need to start focusing on monsters and spells more. This ice cave is currently monsterless. It's still pretty hard to get through though.

Finally done redoing the main character's sprite set. I feel like this took me way too long, but I like the results.

I pulled through and made myself sit down and do maptiles for a game area over the 3 day weekend. It was tough (I feel like maptiles are what I'm least confident doing) but I managed to get some pretty satisfactory results.
I think it looks a bit like a cross between Secret of Evermore and Dragon Quest, and I'm fine with that.
Now if I can come up with maptiles over the weekend like this more consistently then I might have a playable game before too much longer.

I made a thing. I don't know if I'll use it for any game or anything, I kind of just made it for fun. Which is weird, I've never really done anything like that before.
