Just started making a Zelda-type video game

Post by AnimeLovingMatt02 »

It will be called "Kingdom of Xoles."

Once I get some part of it done, there will be a demo version of it.

Ooh, a dev thread. What's the game going to be about?

It might be a typical fantasy story, but I haven't thought of the story yet, plus I need to learn how to program a Zelda-like game on this engine. I've known about Smokey McGoo, which uses Zelda-like gameplay. However, I want the gameplay to be as faithful to the FC/NES version of Zelda as possible.

I worked on a NES Zelda clone back in 2016-2017 but never quite finished it. If you want to look at the game files and the code let me know, though IIRC I did a terrible job commenting the codebase so I'm not sure how useful it'd be.

Hmmm, I dunno if I should use the source code... All I wanted to go for is a faithful "reskin" of Zelda for this engine. :???:

This might not be the best engine if all you want to do is reskin and remap the Legend of Zelda. However, that type of game can be made with OHR. But you will have to learn the plot scripting, and program most of the action elements. At a time like this, it would be really handy to be able to search games and game tags, to find other action rpgs, and see how they got it done.

If all you're interested in is doing a faithful reskin you should probably use Zelda Classic instead. Its like OHRRPGCE, but for Zelda. Takes a lot of the basic difficulties of making a Zelda-clone out of the way.

Maybe I'll do it in C++!

If you want to learn or improve at C++, that's a great idea. If you want to create a Zelda-like, I advise against it. An existing game engine will save you a lot of trouble, and there's so many to choose from.
