Red Triangle Games Projects (Development Thread)

Post by RMZ »

<img src="https://www.redtrianglegames.com/img/de ... ompare.png">

I've mentioned it before but I'm gonna probably be in the bundle format for a while, at least if I wanna sell games on Steam or offer them. Paying $100 submission to put a game there when it's gonna be free and also like 20 minutes, seems stupid. So I'm gonna try to get games with about an hour of content every few years and see how many I can do. Spoonweaver told me to name the bundle this and everyone in Discord seemed to agree it was a good idea.

The first bundle would be free and will include Scare Spree, Graffiti Goose, Knight Slights and Missing You. Scare Spree is probably the game I'll need to tinker with for a while to elevate the art a little. I spent a couple hours this morning adding shadows using the multiply feature and I love the results, even on the old art. I'm planning on doing some even more creative things with it moving forward. In the catacombs level I was thinking of doing spotlight shading around the player with glows from lanterns illuminating the cave. I always thought that was the weakest level anyways. I always seem to revisit this game every few years and enjoy it when I do.

Knight Slights is going to get original music from Ravancloak and will be tamed down to an ages 13+ range of jokes. The OHR version will not be included in the bundle but will likely be uploaded in multiple places.

Got some splash footage for my trailer done today and it looks great I think! The key art will be used in the game selection interface too.

I like the idea of this thing being something fun I work on between projects. The most amount of work will be to fixing up the art on Scare Spree and then making sure that Knight Slights doesn't feel 17+ anymore.

Looking at the video footage, it's awesome I got to team up with a different group of people for each one. I think that's what makes each one really feel different and unique.

Haven't addressed any of these titles in a good while but am gearing up for another small update.

I am on the fence about it, but thinking about putting Video Goose in the bundle as well. As of now I am maybe 60% for, 40% against it. I feel like it will be, because what's the point in paying two fees for two free games when VG is short and could easily just be in the bundle with the first goose game.

The major game to update is Scare Spree and I'm gearing up for another afternoon to update some more maptiles. The next area on the list is the school, which has a horribly inconsistent scaling for the environment. I'm also thinking of changing the sports team banners from GO GOBLINS to GO GEESE. The plan as of now is to have the bundle done and on the store by 10/1, so that the spooky games like Video Goose and Scare Spree can be enjoyed before Halloween for a new audience.

Unrelated to this project, I am also thinking strongly about revisiting MTA. I don't plan to remake it, but plan to do more of a Remaster. See about getting Soda Piggy to put in some uncompressed music, update the art to allow for larger characters, do more animations, improve cutscenes. People have been complaining about the beginning of that game for a while and I think I'll revisit some of those environments. I'll probably take some elements from Axe Cop and put them in here, like the run system (no jumps), the party swap feature, etc. It'll take a while to revisit each section of the game piece by piece but I think it's necessary to preserve my work, and the work of those who helped me better. That's a next year project if I still feel as strongly about it then as I do now.

Finished a session for Scare Spree. Trying to not go nuts with time on it and just do it as I feel inspired, but this time I added ramps of shading to various objects, redid the bushes and redid the grass tiles. I have a few more segments for the Neighborhood level to do before I can check it off the list.

Thanks!

I think the neighborhood is more or less good to go so I'm moving on to the school now. The school is arguably my favorite level but it had the worst use of overhead tile perspective and things looked awful and flat. I've been chipping away at basically a complete graphical overhaul for the area. I redid all the walls last night as some of the logic for the height of objects, walls, etc were just off.

I also had my animation for the end tag of my video I need to make updated to include Video Goose.

I've been toying with the idea of not calling it Project Triangle and just calling it Red Triangle Super Collection. I've been having fun with short games this year with people and being able to feature them all in the bundle for a long time to come sounds nice to me. I'm proud of the five very unique titles the bundle already has and it'll be interesting to see how much more variety it gets over time.

Been having fun with this a little more than other weeks. Last session I did the shadows, lockers and redid the cafeteria tables. Still have a ways to go but it's been an enjoyable process.

I mentioned on the Discord of doing a remaster of MTA at some point with better art. I have been reflecting on the time spent on Scare Spree's graphical remaster and I will likely still do that, but maybe not as severe as I had planned. I definitely want to take advantage of custom sprites for scale purposes for that game and at the very least touch on the wheat farm that people seem to dislike so much. Soda Piggy will also be able to give me music that's not crazy compressed, to fit Google Play's filesize requirements, so his music will sound even better. That's a next year project. I don't want to remake the game, as I don't want to do another four years, but if I can spend 6 months or less on it and walk away from it feeling like 10+ years later when I wanna replay it for fun it's better, then I'll feel good about it. It's crazy the amount of things we used to rig for OHR games that are standard now. It's exciting to go back and add them in here.

Still having fun and making small updates everyday. Last night I did the door arches. Transparency blending is seriously amazing and I hope more people do it in the future. I also updated the school library to actually look like a place people could read and check out books. It's nuts it was just a boring room with bookcases in it before.

Been chipping away at this, as October 1st is going to creep up on me fast after it becomes September! The school level is finished for Scare Spree and I have minor touch ups for the neighborhood. Doing tiles for Blood Ledger I feel confident I can save my messy catacombs level now without it being a massive chore.

I got the beginnings of my game selection screen done by making a slice collection and all of the assets needed for it. Hopefully I can get it to work soon. It's been a rough week, been sick, but I'm getting better so I expect work to resume promptly on it. The idea is it will scroll through left to right and update the logo, the genre and the release dates for each one. After you select a game, a load up screen will show with more details about the game before going into launching it.

Nice slice collection!

I think that is a good layout for game selection.

Thanks James!

Spent a little bit of time this morning getting it all to work and am quite pleased with it. I just need to figure out how to get the other games to quit back into the collection file and not just exit the experience altogether.

I finished up all of the menu interface stuff and the title sequencing for the bundle. I'm very happy with this. All that's left is Scare Spree's final level and then the touch ups to Video Goose with Bena, some final testing, and it's ready for the October 1 release date.

I'm on the last level of Scare Spree. Made some solid progress on it today by changing it from a weird tan cave to more like an actual dark and dank castle. I based the new map off of one of the battle maps from Mario Kart and it has made the level substantially more fun.

I think I'm close to being finished with the catacombs level, maybe another two sessions or so. After that I have some plans to redo the title screen and the various gameplay screens before and after levels. Hoping to have all of Scare Spree done before 9/11 when the Halloween contest starts up.

Had a pretty solid Labor Day session, got the demon statues and a summoning circle to go in the middle of the stage. I'd say the level is 90% done, and what's left is making some new NPCs for the area (right now it repeats half of them, most levels have the full range of unique ones), and then see about doing a fog layer over everything. I'll put the same fog, a bit thicker, in the neighborhood too.
