The prize money has been bumped up by $100 thanks to donations for the contest.
This amount may still go up depending on how many people enter the contest.
It's currently at $210

Also, Just to confirm as there have been a few people asking or assuming
The 2 wheels, gimmick and theme, are going to be spun 1 time for the whole of the contest.
Everyone will be making a game with the same theme.
It's basically like,"there will be a mystery theme that I'll announce at the contest start"
But since I'm entering I don't want anyone assuming I'm picking the theme I want, so a wheel will actually be spun and the themes come from all of you, for fairness.

Double ALSO!
You can choose to enter AFTER the wheel has been spun and theme announced, if you like.
You don't have to confirm that you are entering until the deadline when you would turn in the game you are making.
And if anyone that has already sent money would like to back out, I will send your money back, and still keep the prize pot the same amount.

THE SPINS HAVE BEEN SPUN!
I have decided to spin the wheels early and give people a chance to mill over the theme and gimmick for this contest.
The Contest still starts on 6/12!!
Technically you should not start working on your game till then!
Honor System!

Anyways. The Theme is
THE PAST

and the Gimmick
Reduce Palette (64 colors)

I wish you all luck and hope we all have fun making games

Gaplan, Artimus Bena, and Giz all witnessed the spins along with others for the second spin.

1 Final word
You are free to start working on your projects on 4/12, at the stroke of midnight if you prefer.
You do not have to send any money in or confirm entry until you have uploaded your game and wish for it to be in the contest.
Good Luck everyone!

My year of epic team ups continues and I am really thrilled about it.

This time it's with Holly and Artimus Bena! We have a concept and are planning but are following honor system as well. I think we got some pretty great spins on the wheels.

just how far in the past counts as The Past?

like, could I make something set in 2018 and have it count because it takes place before the covid pandemic

That team already meets the theme on its own.

I wonder how many people are going to make an entry about how, when they were kids, the world used to be in black and white.

In all seriousness, I feel like the ideal way to implement the theme would be to make a game that centers around events that are in the past from the perspective of the characters in it.  So I think that, if someone made a game that takes place in the distant future and has you exploring the wreckage of the first interstellar starship that was lost in an accident centuries earlier, that could still fit the theme, but a game that takes place in the Stone Age and has you trying to make weather forecasts, and scoring points based on how accurate they are, wouldn't fit.

But, at the same time, (#1) I'm not the one judging the entries, and (#2) I'm the guy who suggested "upside-down" as a theme, with no particular idea in mind of what it was supposed to mean; I was just curious to see how other people would interpret it.  So you can probably ignore whatever I think about what does and doesn't fit the theme.

Interpreting the theme is completely up to the developer. If you think your interpretation may be pushing it, I suggest explaining your reasoning in your game description or something.
