Okay, so this may not be the best quality image (I'm on the laptop again ^^;), but it shows today's progress.
I've been working on the one thing I suck at :- House graphics.
I've done research (and got a lot of help from the dudes down at #slimesalad (mainly James)) and I've definitely improved on my housing

, please tell me what you all think!
I've also included a few hero walkabouts, some of them need work (the gentleman at the bottom right needs his pants hue-shifting to make them visible!), but overall they all follow the feel I'm going for.

I LOVE what you've done with the roof here. I wouldn't mind if every single roof in your game looked like this. The way the texture disappears when it approaches a seam is absolutely marvelous.
The little wooden lattice underneath the front of the roof is a little strange-looking since the wall beneath it has nothing to decorate it. I think X-intersecting wooden beams and maybe a window or two would help on that part of the front.
Also the house's proportion is a little off - the front of the house looks like it's half a story higher than the parts sticking out of the side.
Finally, the NPCs. I think an outline would help them since so many of their hues make them blend into the dirt. Or you could deliberately give everyone blue jeans and blond hair for contrast, but that wouldn't help any player characters who may or may not be in this image. Incidentally, the walkabout in the center of the screen has a very nice color scheme and design working for her. The guy nearby in the red shirt and brown pants, not so much.
Overall, though, I am very pleased with what I see here! Good job! Keep going!

I wanted to make this building as a little sample one before doing any more work on them, but you have gave me some great ideas there! Thank you!

Hah! I just noticed that then ^^;, I'll fix that when I'm next working on the game.

I think the issue lies in the floor itself, maybe I'll darken it a bit so that the lighter coloured characters stand-out a bit better. I'll experiment with outlines on the characters too, but I've been intentionally avoiding doing so for the overall style (not to mention that it cuts down on the amount of colours in a characters palette).

The girl in the centre has been in the game since LoN back in 2009, I think she was the most popular then so I kept the design the same, it was really hard getting her hair to look right in the walkabout.
The dude at the bottom needs some palette tweaking, those pants are... well pants. I've always had a few design issues with him, and I've not changed the design since 2008 (waaaay back in my first game), so maybe now is the best time to do that.
Thank you for the feedback Baconlabs, it's always great to get such a thorough critique.

If nothing else, you can give Bernard the Brown-Panted a pair of bright khakis.

@Twin: Nice retro graphics!
Doesn't help improve my sudden impulsive desire to make an NES style game.

I feel like I should warn you, these 8-bit graphics are practically begging me to do interpretive fanart of them.

I think I'm starting to get this thing down. If you look back at my earlier monster sprites, most of them are pretty flat when it comes to shading. In this sprite the shading helps pop the image right into the third dimension. Aside from the shading, almost all of the sprite has a dark outline to help contrast with whatever background it appears in. This sprite has only one main color, and the different shades and highlights add up to a total of just five different colors (plus black for the shadow). I can see how a monster with more than one main color would be more difficult to shade though, considering I'm limited to a palette of 15 colors per sprite. I'll keep experimenting to figure out ways to stretch that palette, though.
It's a mummy, by the way, in case you weren't sure.

Holy linen wrapped pharaohs, Batman! That thing is amazing! And at only 6 colors, crikey but I need to study that and learn from it...
