You make your way into the cave entrance, with the larger members having to squeeze through.

What's your marching order?

Peanut sticks to the back as usual, possibly in front of Tim-Tim.

Beardthar steps aside to let Akbar push past. He feels pretty safe with both the Mule and the Paladin in the lead.

Beardthar keeps looking around, trying to spot anything interesting as they go in. His long devotion to the Trees and Birds and Stars of Druidic discipline have not dulled his childhood love of limestone and mineral strata, so his eyes are gleaming with delight at going underground.

You march into the cave. The inside is rather damp, and there are many different types of moss and fungi all over the walls and the floor.

Not far from the entrance, perhaps 30 feet or so, you come to a fork. The one to the left is on a slightly downwards slope and is much smaller than the path to the right. The path to the right goes upwards slightly.
  • Akbar: 14 + 0 + 1 + 1 = 16 Success
    Beardthar: 3 + 5 + 3 = 11 Fail
    Peanut: 8 + 5 + 1 = 14 Success
    Spittle: 11 + 0 + 0 = 11 Fail
    Tim-Tim: 17 + 0 + 3 = 20 Success
In between the two paths, perhaps five feet up from the ground, is a small crack. It seems big enough for a kobold (or other Small creature) to fit through. No where big enough for a man to enter though.

Consulting your map, you see no indication of the path to the left.

Knowledge (Architecture and engineering) (1d20 + Ranks + INT)
  • Akbar: 5 + 0 + -1 = 4 Fail
    Beardthar: 17 + 0 + 1 + 2 = 20 Success
    Peanut: 8 + 0 + 2 = 10 Fail
    Spittle: 16 + 0 + 1 = 17 Fail
    Tim-Tim: 19 + 0 + 1 = 20 Success
It would seem that the path to the left was not originally a path. By the looks of the rock, you guess it was a wall that was knocked out to gain access to the downwards path, wherever that may lead.

Either way, you'll need some light source to continue, as whatever light was available from the cave entrance is quickly fading with the setting sun.

Tim-Tim casts light on his magic dagger, and hold it up to shine the way.
Let's just keep going and ignore that unexpected path, we're not here to root out kobolds in their den.
Then Tim-Tim shoves the mule down the path to the right.

Beardthar wrote:I agree. The right fork is better. I'll bet that left path was dug out by the same clumsy hands that walled up around the entrance. Those poor stones! Kobolds have no finesse!

Peanut chuckles, "I got my fill at the colloseum." And continues onward.

You continue down the path to the right in the same marching order as before. The path opens into a large-ish area, perhaps 35 feet by 25 feet. A single pillar stands to the north east.

Listen (1d20 + Ranks + WIS)
  • Akbar: 2 + 0 + 1 + 1 = 4 Fail
    Beardthar: 20 + 0 + 3 = 23 Success
    Peanut: 18 + 4 + 1 + 2 = 25 Success
    Spittle: 8 + 0 + 0 = 8 Fail
    Tim-Tim: 12 + 0 + 3 + 2 = 17 Success
In the distance, you can hear the dripping of water. Also, you're not sure, but you think you heard the sound of small feet moving away quickly.

The passage continues north, but there is a side passage to the west. The eastern passage is on your map, but according to it, the passage only exits to a small cave.

Spot (1d20 + Ranks + WIS)
  • Akbar: 13 + 0 + 1 + 1 = 15 Fail
    Beardthar: 8 + 5 + 3 = 16 Fail
    Peanut: 4 + 5 + 1 = 10 Fail
    Spittle: 20 + 0 + 0 = 20 Success
    Tim-Tim: 3 + 0 + 3 = 6 Fail
Out of the corner of your eye, you see a couple of shapes quickly duck down out of sight in the eastern passage.

The passage to the north is the way to go, but the map does say it will be a rather long trek, full of twists and turns. Considering that these caves might be infested with kobolds, it's probably going to be full of traps.

Spot (1d20 + Ranks + WIS)
  • Akbar: 10 + 0 + 1 + 1 = 12 Fail
    Beardthar: 3 + 5 + 3 = 11 Fail
    Peanut: 18 + 5 + 1 = 24 Success
    Spittle: 14 + 0 + 0 = 14 Fail
    Tim-Tim: 20 + 0 + 3 = 23 Success
As you look to the north, you see a small creature dash quickly away. It looked like a kobold or possibly a goblin.

Spittle gestures down the eastern passage with his weapon, rather startled to finally notice something in the gloom.
Spittle gently says.. wrote:Something's back there watching us..
