When I try to play, I see the episode selection screen, but I can go no further. Pressing esc or alt brings up the menu, suggesting to me that the new game script is failing to run or terminating early or something :(

So, for clarification, this crash is still

* Random
* Happening with all games (randomly)
* Happening on two different computers

Right?

Right now, you're looking at wiping your machine. You need to wipe it to install Ubuntu or you could wipe it and reinstall Windows.
